What's in your music collection?
Wow, you have no idea how wonderful it is to hear the creative and witty comments from your daughter in law!!! Congratulations and best of luck, Emily!!
You rock and have the chutzpah!!!
... message that I ever got said "Music is the universal language of mankind." We think alike.
I really enjoyed your piece - great delivery and topic...made me start looking through my own favorites! Elizabeth
I don't think about this as much anymore, but when I was a teenager I practically used to WISH I'd get hit by a bus or a car but somehow my Discman would be safe and whoever was coming to draw the chalk outline would be like "The poor kid. At least he went out listening to Warehouse: Songs & Stories by Hüsker Dü. And look in his backpack! I see a copy of Göedel, Escher, Bach and Braniac's Hissing Prigs In Static Couture. This kid was happening!"
So I can definitely relate! A really fun piece, well-read, and cleanly recorded, I must say!

"All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy" - Spike Milligan
...I remember tormenting a co-worker in the early 90s by telling her that her boyfriend looked like one of the guys from Color Me Badd and singing, "I adore...mi amor" every time he called. In my defense, he really *did* look like him, but I probably should have refrained from singing that song to her.
Fun entry, strong voice and great mental picture...best of luck!
Wunderbar. Emily, I can't believe I haven't heard your entry yet. But now that I have, I am so glad you entered this competition. I loved it. You have a really strong presence, your voice is pleasant to listen to, and you write well. And, well, I can relate to your topic. I have always loved music, loved stories and radio. But I remember being very, very shy about what I collected. I even kept myself from brousing in Tower Records with my Mom, because I was so worried people would judge me for what I was into. Now, things have changed. And thank Goodness. Anyway, I applaud your crusade to rebel against the music gestapo. Whose right is it anyway to judge us for something so personal? Geesh. I hate "those people!" (t-hee). Anyway, this is a super-strong submission and I really hope you make it to the next round.

Keep on rockin' in the free world.
This was a very funny piece, and it was very well organized. It's just as relevant now in a day where everyone appears to have iPods, because they undoubtedly still have CDs of many kinds in their collection.
Of course, another thing to consider is that it's understandable to still have albums by Color Me Badd in your collection. After all, who would buy them now? That's how I currently feel about my two Creed albums and the soundtrack to "Steel". These albums I haven't listened to for years, so I know your sentiments exactly. Good work!
im hiding all my mRs. millers and claudine lounget... reCords right now!
opps.! .. did i say reCords.. i meant mp3's.. yah.. only mp3's here officer.. no reCords.. wHat's a reCord anyways? ..

Loved it, Emily! Superbly written and delivered! When you get your own show on public radio, I'm definitely going to be listening. Loved the bit about the Celtic dreams cd. Amy Grant, anyone?
loved your clip! especially loved the delivery; das ist gut! you can tell so much about a person by their collections of things (although i tend to go more toward the bookshelf, personally). ;) keep up the good work!
I loved it. I think you are very "hosty". Keep up the good work. Oh, and word to those whose comments I've read about getting rid of your embarrassing albums... SAVE THEM! I have never gotten rid of an album. This is who you are! Don't be ashamed!
Hosty like, whoa! Hope to hear more from you. Good luck, Emily. :)
And there is nothing in my collection I won't claim. Even if it's there merely for the mockability, my musical snobbery knows no bounds. I'd say 10% of my collection is stuff I love because it's stupid. For example, I collect KISS tribute CDs. My fave: Kiss My Grass, a hillybilly tribute to KISS.
And if there is ever a Marilyn Manson Christmas Album, or Marilyn Sings Aretha, I'm all over it!

I love KISS and I love bluegrass. It's the perfect match. ;)
My other fave tribute compilation is Moody Bluegrass. A bunch of top shelf, Nashville session guys did a tribute to the Moody Blues. I can't stand the Moody Blues, but I love the CD. I love artists good enough to make me love that which I hate. I wouldn't be surprised if they could make me love Poison.
Okay, maybe I would be surprised but not shocked. ;)

With all humility, I'm among the ones who will blow you away. I've been collecting music of all genres since starting in radio at 17, eons ago. Though I will cop to having Rick Springfield's first two albums, which may earn me a little hellfire. The dog on the cover is cute.

I always check out someone's music collection. Well, and their library, too.
It's so TELLING!!! Most of the time it's a disappointment. People can have such bland taste. But every once in a while, I'm blown away. And that makes it all worthwhile.
Good job! Good luck!

You sounded great but theres something thats missing. Prehaps a southern twang or a northern howl...maybe even a valley girl tone..I just cant finger it.
Good luck!
If you would like to talk....lets do it!
I found your entry enticing and enjoyable. I just packed up all my CD's and sold some of the more embarrassing ones at a yard sale. No one will ever know my secret now!
Good luck!!!
P.S. thanks for the comments about my submission!
This is fabulous and so true. Great all-around - voice, content, you name it!
Commute to work with me - you know you want to.
You have great hosting skills. I think you can expand on this on why you like these songs, is it for enjoyment, breaking up. This has a unique dyhnamic to it.
You showed "hostiness" and still told a compelling story. The fact that you named some of my favs such as Outkast, The Beetles, Ace of Base, and dare I say it....Color Me Baad:) tells me your the type of woman I'd call sister and hang with it for a spell.lol. I'd trust your reviews and perspective on entertainment/cultural matters. Very very nice, Emily.
All best!
While I was listening it made me remember why I got rid of that ABBA album I used to have. (To protect the guilty I refuse to tell how I got it).
Then I looked at my bookshelf and magazine rack and realized this goes beyond music. I think I'll install another deadbolt on my door.
Enjoyed your presentation and the concept.
Good Luck!

Cheers!
This is fantastic! Funny, charming, witty...perhaps we have the future host of "McCord Mix" on our hands? Great Job!!
Your piece is really excellent -- cleverly worded, strongly voiced, lots of personality. Is the Michael Bolton revelation true?
Anyway -- good luck with the rest of the quest.
For the encouraging comments. It's always with a bit of trepidation to put yourself out there. And while the Micahel Bolton album isn't "exactly" it for me, I have waaayyy more embarrassing albums that I'm still hesitant to own up to!
Excellent piece, Emily. And extra points for a Color Me Badd reference. Great vocal delivery, intriguing presentation. Oh, the places you'll go.
