You'll hear some short clips and original music from my radio show/podcast "DIY, Portland" that I produced and edited just for this here contest. I hope you like it. You can find out more at my website www.myspace.com/julieontheradio.

Gave you 5 stars, and that was really rare for me!!! I added them up, and I only had 20 5-star-entries out of the 600+ I voted for. And that really says something.

...then i don't know what. i already voted for you a couple of weeks ago, but even now, having listened to a lot more entries, i'd have to say that you are one of THE best submissions. hope you make it to round 2!

I have yet to receive that magic phone call...I'm honored to be in the top 100 for "people's choice" though. Thanks for voting everyone.

Good music choice and overview, leaves me wondering what you might be talking about next. The first few seconds sounded a little clumsy, but you kicked into your usual talkative self after that.
Good stuff Julie, and good luck!

Did I do it right? I gave your clip all the stars I could. I want you to win because not only are you darling and fun and interesting but also because your voice, music editing, and timing are flawless.

Great concept, I love radio when we are entertained and learn ---all at the same time. Excellent submission, you sound great and yes, you have my vote. Well Done!

I haven't been brave enough to post a link to my submission on AIR but here it is:

Great job!

I'm kind of addicted to shows (radio or television) that teach you how to do stuff...even if I never plan on doing it myself. LOL.

This is a fun program that I think could be educational and interesting--as well as a pleasure to listen to.

You've got that NPR voice vibe going, very nice. And the DIY subject can be extended endlessly--really great idea. (My buddy Ray is ready to talk to you about building your own electric guitar...)

Hey, thanks for the comment. If your friend is anywhere near Oregon, I'd love to talk to him about DIY guitars. That sounds like a really cool project!

Speaking of your comment in the "How Confident" poll, of course. You're so talented, sort of makes me feel totally inadequate and a bit envious. How's that for baring one's soul? I hope you do well. Quite deserving.

You've got my vote. And I love your grammar patrol on this site. It's how I found you. Does that make you a complete nerd? Nah. Smart cookie, in my book.
Great voice, great idea.
It's one of the few "shows" I'd listen to.

What a great radio voice! The other commenters are right, your piece not only has a real TAL flavor, but I could completely picture your voice on one of the segments! DIY culture is a super-intriguing topic as well. I have a bunch of friends and some old roommates who are obsessed with fishing stuff out of the alleys and reconfiguring them into new and ever-weirder art pieces. There are lots of things to investigate with this topic!
I say full marks! Good luck to you!

You've got it all. Yes, ma'am. Very 'This American Life' yet still your own. Liked the idea, the presentation, the chutzpah. Go to it!

I am myspace friends with the other Elizabeth Venable. My radio show at KUCR is a music show and so I have played pretty much all of the people that have played with members or are family members of the Ida people (Tara Jane Oneil, White Magic, Retsin, etc.). Anyhow, the other Elizabeth Venable is in that category and I have played her band Naysayer before on my show. It is funny because i knew and loved most of those bands before i knew she had my name.

But yeah, she's a great doppleganger to have.

Nice idea, good use of the word scenester, and also fat suit, and best of all we actually got a sense of what the show would be like. For that you get the fith star!

Submitted by jsabatier on May 16, 2007 - 1:52pm.

The word was "zinester" not "scenester." Glad you dig the segment, though.

Julie,

I feel horrible... you've had my vote of five stars since I first heard you. My secret wish since hearing your submission is that you would deem me one of these "people" out there doing something that you would want to tell the world about.

Steve

I believe the only immorality is doing to another that which we would not have done to ourselves.

Submitted by jsabatier on May 13, 2007 - 10:09pm.

Thanks for the comments (and the vote of 5 stars!) It sounds like you are doing some interesting things that could be considered DIY. One little thing, though: as a former English major, I feel bound to point out that the word you wanted to use in your comment headline was probably "remiss" instead of "amiss." You can stop feeling horrible now.

Great idea for a show--
I've been spending long hours in the woods with a hot, 24-year old plumber--learning how to build fires without matches, identify edible plants, and change the oil in my car.
Just basic, important stuff.

There are people who take care to understand how the world works. Who make stuff fix stuff and need little.
And usually they fly pretty low under the radar.

So it's nice to hear from them on your show. I expect we'll be hearing a lot more from them--sooner or later.

Thanks for this Julie.

Julie, I've listened to over one hundred entries and love yours the best. I really think you're on to something and I have no doubt that the talented people at NPR will recognize that!

I've recently discovered the world of DIY and consider myself a recovering IGA (instant gradification addict). :)

I've begun to realize that there are many benefits to DIY...from creative expression to recycling/reusing in a world of excess to living life to the fullest by connecting to our own creations...everything looks, tastes and FEELS better when you sit back and enjoy the result of your mind, body and spirit working together to CREATE--rather than making a phone call, ordering online, or zipping over to the mall.

BEST of luck, and email me if you want to interview a newby homesteader!
