With a push from Elena

Submitted by Daniel H Steinberg on April 28, 2007 - 12:18pm. ::

A recording of Elena when she was six years old reminded me of how I got started in radio at that same age forty years ago. It was just the push I needed to enter this contest.

That's the best part of radio, sharing stories. You're very good at that. Good luck, Daniel!

I think you take away from your "two minutes of fame" by adding the family clips. You have one of those voices that should be reading the Holy Bible....heavenly. Great Voice!

Nicely done Daniel.

I really enjoyed your entry. I got a good sense of who you are and why you're here. I really like that you included the snippets of your family. You held my interest for the full 2 minutes. Very nice.

Also, I love your comparison to bedtime stories. I, too, love the intimacy of radio. It sounds cheezy, but these people are my companions in a place where I often feel a little bit like a fish out of water. Helps keep me sane.

I could definitely relate to your desire to work in radio at night. My first stint in radio was as a late-night volunteer music programmer. My shift started at 11 p.m. and ended at 1 a.m. I don't know how many listeners I had, but I always loved it when friends told me they were listening to my show as they drifted off to sleep. I never thought of it as a bedtime story sort of activity, but you are spot-on.

Thanks and good luck. I hope to hear more from you.

Im so glad you sent me the link to this. The candy company list sounds like something I heard in my house just a few months ago. And I love your dad. Hilarious. Great editing

Daniel,
You sound like you belong there....it's you! you sound wonderful and truly have a gift for radio. Any station that you were a part of would have a ratings increase in no time. Great job! Anne, Brad & Jenny Leland

It was wonderful to hear Elena and your parents frame the story.

Nicely put together. The interview with your parents works beautifully. It's nice to let someone else tell the story.

Daniel,

You have a great voice, very NPR-y, the kind you can listen to at length without getting irritated.

You sound great, Daniel. Best of luck with the competition.

That is a cliche and trite expression but the one that says it all for your piece. I'm inspired myself listening to it. What did you get out of it? It is such an intangible beast, the desire/need/purpose to be in media and speak our voice. We can not offer words, can we?
I'm grateful that this contest allows us all to become exposed to diverse perspectives and similarities we all hold. Thanks for this piece...all the different voices really told me more about you. I like you and your family already!
Great piece, exceptional!

Moving and inspiring. So great that Elena remains such a driving force for her dad. I really loved the piece and look forward to more!

This is great. I want to listen to more like this. I love the whole package!

As I listen to more of my competitors, I become...unconcerned about my chance of winning - Maybe it's just that my style is very different, but I envy and really like others' talent.

I've known this personality for a while both personally and professionally. His voice is great but his editing is even better as you can tell in this piece.

He is a master artist at editing and retaining the key message. Personally I can attest to his wonders in putting together entertaining and illuminating 10-15 episodes. The only way it would be better is if it his voice instead of the host he has to work with.

BTW, the little girl in this piece is more than just a cute little voice. I'm pretty sure she's the inspiration for the submission and I'm absolutely sure she's smiling thinking about her dad doing the one thing he really loves.

Daniel,
I liked your presentation, your sentiment and your production. Surely some of it is that I (and how many others in this contest?) can relate -- having been in radio and found the realities of life -- family, bills, time, etc. etc., got in the way.
Well done and good luck!
