THIS CONTEST LOOKS RIGGED!!!!

Submitted by Woody Nelson on March 8, 2007 - 5:50pm. ::

How is it that a radio station and a podcaster have suddenly become the lead affiliates here? Smells fishy to me just like another competition I was in www.kcradiogod.com that one seemed rigged like I think this one is!!!

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Please correct me if I am wrong, email me at RockMeWoody@aol.com

I was trying to promote this contest heavily but maybe it is a waste of time...watch now I have made comments, somehow Big Brother will censor me...

Oh I almost forgot, what the hell are the 195 points for? The others have less points and more profile views, makes no sense to me, I smell a rat here!!!

This contest came along just at the right time for him. He must be in the mix somewhere...

It'll be interesting to see how the dynamic of this whole thing changes in the next round, once all this crazy energy is focused on just a few entrants. Look out!

Woody was booted from this site weeks ago..so there really isn't a need to respond to his post.....

Hold your horses...
1) We knew it would a bit like "American Idol" with public votes;
2) Only ONE of the winners each round will be influenced by popular vote;
3) This is NPR... if we can't have some degree of faith in them, we might as well move to Sweden... or Costa Rica... or Venus.

As they say in Costa Rica, "Sea mas calma; no se preocupe absolutamente tanto."

I don't know how they say that on Venus.

But I guess legwork pays off...the reason a radio station is a top affiliate is because they already have traffic to generate hits from the little green button. Not a lot of people go through my website, but oh well! At least I'm trying to put out positive feedback to all the ones I like and promote myself...I just want to get heard by the judges is all. I hope that the affiliate stuff doesn't matter quite as much.
Cheers!

I think it always seems like contests are rigged, especially when the inner workings aren't quite as transparent as we would like. But my experience with projects like this on a smaller scale has taught me that no one can really anticipate all the wrinkles the first time around.
(This is a hint that this shouldn't be the only stab at this, NPR. If the networks can recycle star dancing, bachelors and survival scenarios every years, you can do this more than once).
I participated in American Candidate where people complained about how alliances and networks undermined the bulleting board discussions. None of that mattered, really, the candidates were selected by Showtime to reflect their expectations of what would attract viewers.
This program admits it. Nine finalists will be selected by the judges. Only one by the votes and lists.
So, in the end, working the boards won't help the less talented, and the more talented will only improve their chances by less than 10%.

Its a bit "unfair." Luckily for us its only a popularity contest for one, while the 9 other finalists are chosen by the judges.

I am being optimistic. Let the best talker / mixer win!

I'm not sure if I'd call it rigged, but I know that PodCasters are using their social networks to promote their samples. That's how I even found out about this contest.

Hi Woody,

I believe (and I hope someone running the contest will set me straight if I'm wrong), but the number is actually the amount of times someone has clicked to here from that particular site.

For instance, Podcasting News ran a story about the contest, so people clicked the link from there 53 times. :-)

Actually I don't think the top affiliates has anything to do with the actual contest.

Hope that helps! :-)

Only ONE of the ten semifinalist slots depends on voting. These message boards remind me of the student government elections of my youth, or maybe it's more like backstage at a beauty pageant?

only ONE based on voting AND review by the judges. So I'm guessing a William Hung won't make it to the next round even if he/she gets the most votes.
