Simple Voice VS Production Skills

Submitted by lostinmaidyland on April 30, 2007 - 11:52am. ::

I recently uploaded my entry to the contest as an introduction of who I am and what I would like to do as a host. I have listened to other people out there and their production skills make me feel like I have a Clinton's chance in '08.

Am I being paranoid? Should I let my entry speak for itself? Or, should I try again and add some music cues or other production magic?

We're pretty much all of the opinion that production values are to be discounted by the judges. They are really after the hostiness of the applicant. So don't worry about the production quality of your submission.

Besides there seems to be no way to edit a submission once it is uploaded - your die has been cast.

It is clear that the judges seemed to want an all around host, including production. i just listened to the first 5 in alphabetical order, and all had a higher level of production than my own entry (and I am definitely not bitter about that, i kept saying that I knew i wasn't going to win [I made my entry really late]-- and that's because I could evaluate it in contrast to others).

Sheer voice does not a radio host make. Sheer voice will not prevail through distortion, sans content. Engineering is not a "trick" or "bells and whistles." It is a real, relevant skill set. It is part of what makes any radio personality, IMHO, especially now and in the future as technology becomes more accessible.

"Hostiness" *god how that word is annoying* is a matter of skill and almost all of the people that were chosen by the judges were all around contenders.

This is not to dissuade people from entering that don't have that by any means, but to assume that everyone regardless of effort or skill is on equal footing is just strange.

Many of my top pics made the top 100 in terms of judge's choice, and I *did* evaluate on production as well as voice, content, and personality.

I had always said that I hoped that the all around people got in, and it looks like they did.

And good for them.

Alas the question of reworking your entry is moot, since do-overs/resubmissions are not an option. Once you're on, you're on.

However, according to the judges this contest is about finding that voice that makes you stop and listen on your way around the radio dial, so don't worry too much if your entry lacks production pizzaz. There's nothing wrong with high quality production, but it's not a must. You can find an extensive discussion on the topic here.
