Storytelling in Song

People DO break out into song in real life.
We just don’t have a 20-piece band backing us up.

Your writing made me chuckle and your piece definitely showed your hostiness. I appreciate the subtle changes in tone during your story that really supported what you were saying at the time...it did make me want to hear you break out into some kind of Garrison K-esque number...you strung me along good and I enjoyed every second. Thanks for the entertainment!

Janean, I was very entertained by your submission. The sexy rubber ducky cracked me up! It made me think of comedian Jim Breuer doing that bit about how Brian Johnson, lead singer for AC/DC, could make the Hokay Pokey heavy metal! If you've never heard this, it's very funny.

Good luck to you.

Since we have commented on podcasting, I never did comment on your show. I listen to it several times. I was on the borderline for 4-5 stars. I thought about it and gave it 5 stars because you have a great hosting voice and appropriate for the format. There is nothing wrong with your show. It runs smoothly and you got the passion and intention to make it work. The hold up for me was the Broadway part of the show. I know some know these plays, but I wouldn't know if the audience would realize it. But, I'm glad you mention storytelling because you can broaden this to bands since they're doing a concept album that the whole album is about a story. If you can go broader to the music and Broadway industry, you got a winner. Good luck, and to me, you're still in it.

It's the musical theatre story of my early childhood. The teenage years were spent with ideas explored in "Nothing," moving on to the Gilbert and Sullivan opera of my 13 year marriage...then the rebound relationship of "You Must Meet My Wife"...YIKES, WHAT?! and on to "Make it Another Old Fashioned, Please."

My life is a Kander and Ebb musical.

I loved your take! Great job, and much luck to you.

I really was entertained! You do have the ‘it’ factor for this medium (or hostiness). Meaning you intoxicate the listener from the beginning to end..that’s a good thing!

NPR I'm sure is taking note.

Yes! I want to hear an old fashioned radio program where the music is picked to say something rather than please the labels, rating orgs and other commercial interests. It helps that you have fab cords, too. I really wanted you to break out into that song, got chills when you said, "Hit it," in that big voice. Great job here.

Janean, I just realized I hadn't commented on your entry! And you were my first, how rude of me. Well you know how I feel about it, but I'll go ahead and tell the world. I love it! I think you got "you" down in this piece. And that is exactly what the judges, and your listeners are looking for. Good job. You're great.

Quite a few of those who've been here for weeks were neglected of my votes. Needless to say, yours was one I really liked, I feel the emotion and sense of theatrics in your delivery. This is a good thing because it gives the perception of being engaged and entertained. Makes for great radio company. I don't want a boring know-it-all. There are enough of those. I'd much rather hear the song in your voice.
Good luck to you!

I really liked the writing of this piece. Alot. Especially the dynamic of introducing the husband that gives advice...and "it" was not the advice that lead you to the right choice.

Anyway! I loved the concept, and hear the potential for your ideas...

Sing the rubber ducky torch song for us?

I've never really considered music's lyrics to be stories on par with others.

I like knowing you're my musical opposite. I listen to music and pretty much ignore the lyrics of even my favorite songs. Music deserves to have us representing both ends of the spectrum.

Aside: Did you ever see the play Sideman? While I am a fan of musicals, I was lucky enough to see Sideman with Frank Wood and think it's one of the greatest pieces of theater involving music.

You SURE about that? Links at http://www.publicradioquest.com/node/922

There is certainly a place in the world for instrumentals - if songs are stories, instrumentals are poems.

And YES! One of our local theaters put that on and did a wonderful job. Touching and so honest!
