Two Minutes That Will Change Your Life

Submitted by burkemancometh on May 3, 2007 - 4:53pm. ::

This clip is about me and my departure from Generation Y stereotypes, bullying media-biased news, and unavoidable tabloids. Public Radio is reaching out to people my age, and I can host a meaningful show that people my age and older willingly tune into on radios and iPods.

Wow. Powerful voice and message. I could see you taking on some very powerful guests and not letting them get away with scripted spiels. Nothing irks me more than hearing a host ask a great question, get a weak response and carry on without asking the guest to expound on the response. I catch myself thinking that the host must not have prepared that day or wasn't feeling well when this happens. Maybe some shows should have two hosts -- just to make sure guests don't get away with pat answers. One person can't know everything. Great job!

Imagining your big voice in a twenty-something's body was hard--you could easily tackle material for ANY age range with your talent and versatility. Having said that, love the idea you present and I would listen in. It's always good when interesting juxtapositions occur. Great job, enthusiastic and engaging voice.

Hey man, I appreciate the compliment, but you're going to have to be a little more specific when you say "that post". No matter, though, because I read which post you were referring to, and everything's clear now. Anyway, thanks so much for listening to my audio, and for the nice words!

...but I finally got to listen to your piece... It isn't what you said that caught my ear and held it, it's the way you said it, how you said it... Your voice has an interesting raspy quality underneath the intense focus of your personality, so I caught myself just wondering who you were, what you were like to hang out with, etc. Hey! I call that HOSTINESS!!

BTW, thank you for listening !

Sincerely,

BarbaraAnnKaarina Turning-McCord, R.N.

Your voice is a cross between Al Pacino and Penn Jillette. Penn has a radio show that is funny and I believe is doing well, so I think people will enjoy your sound.

You may be limiting you audience with focusing on Gen Y. I think more people would like to hear you, but not just to learn about why Brit and Kevin are not together.

Great piece overall. Good Luck!

I definitely take that as a complimnt when you say that I sound like Al Pacino. I love that guy! I also like Penn Gillette, and I have heard his radio show before when I was in New York City a while ago. He's been on NPR a few times too.

I appreciate your input on my targeting Generation Y too. I don't think I'm alienating my listeners and only focusing on one demographic. But if I am, you have to admit that it's a huge demographic which has received a lot of focus in recent years.

So thank you for your input, and I will vote on your piece.

Thanks for jumping into the fray. I love your energy and your willingness to debunk stereotypes. Personally, I straddle the Boomer-GenX label and it just depends on which magazine article you read as to which category I fall into.

It's SO funny that just last night I was having a conversation with my fellow "gen y-ers" wondering about this very same thing.

Great job, I love it when I hear an entry that grabs me from the get go and then I just want to hear more. You have a really engaging and unique voice. And thank you also for your thoughful comment on my post.

Best of luck to you!!

Dan,
You were not rude at tall and I am not offened.- Like I said, I saw a sign PUBLIC RADIO CONTEST at my school (UMass Boston) and followed it.It was a fun!
I liked what you had to say...
You would be great at voice-overs as well.
Your voice reminded me of the narrator from a Disneyworld ride(cannot remember) maybe the Runanway train "hey folks, keep your arms inside the train and HANG ON TIGHT!"
Good luck you are a contender.

I'll tell ya, things were certainly dark at the end of the 90s. Glad I fell in love with music when Nirvana were still around.
Great topic, though, I think you definitely have what it takes to host! Good luck!

I never liked the term Gen-X either (too many X things..) And "millennials"... there's a whole bit on that, but that's not what I'm here for.

Your sound is solid, your enthusiasm is infectious. Great work!

Well, I'll give Generation X one credit: You guys had better music that Generation Y did. While Generation X rocked out to Nirvana, Soundgarten, and Dr. Dre, Generation Y saw the demise of the music industry with TRL, Limp Bizket, N SYNC, and other prepackaged deadbeats. I think mainstream music is getting slightly better now, but there's no doubt the TRL days dealt the music industry a major blow.

But that's getting off topic. I'm glad I'm not alone in this project. Thanks for listening, voting, and I wish you all the best.

I guess a 'millenial' is a different name for "Gen-Y". Sorry for the confusion.

Hey there Burkeman you make a compelling pitch. Being obviously classified among the tail end of the GenXers myself, and always resenting the label, it's good to know that there are people your age who, you know, pay attention to things n stuff.

Thanks for the props and for being one of the first to comment on my post, thus getting me started on navigating around the entries.

Hey, anytime man! Thanks for paying it forward and listening to my post. I appreciate everything, and I wish you the best of luck. This should be fun!
