The Tasty Nation

The Tasty Nation, where every snack has a story. From Cool Ranch Dorito's to pan seared scallops, mocha lattes and organic parsley, we are in a food frenzy, and the American plate has never been more politicized. I'm a culinary anthropologist exploring the American consciousness through food.

Fascinating topic. I can think of several stories from right here in Fairbanks, Alaska, where we're obsessed with Thai food and get grumpy when several of our best restaurants close down for the month of January. Native people in the Yukon River village where I lived make moose meat stir-fry. We obsess over the presence of exotic friuts and vegetables in our produce departments, frustrated when the anaheim peppers look wilted or the bananas are brown. Why are we eating those things here in zone one growing conditions? It's amazing. Great idea. Good job with the pitch.

This show should be made! If it were, I would tune in no matter what time it aired. that would not be a problem because I am sure it would air duing drive time...it is that good. The voice is even and compeling, the content had me licking my lips and deep in thought all at once. 5 stars all the way!

I love this voice and I would like to have dinner with the speaker.

I thought this was really cool as well! I'm not sure I understood 70% of the highly descriptive food adjectives you tossed around in there (my idea of cooking is something I can leave boiling or frying in the other room), but I found the WAY you talked about it very engaging. If you can interest people that have no interest in your subject in your subject, THEN I think you may be on to something!
Really fun entry. Good luck, I'd love to hear more of this!

Great voice, great subject, and what was that kid's story, anyway? I like to think that Japanese and Mexican cuisine sort of intersect at ceviche...Did you know that many of the Japanese who work as sushi chefs in the US are in training so they'll be good enough to work in Japan?

I loved this piece, I thought it was fun, smart and totally engaging! I would be a regular listener, burrito in one hand, chopsticks in another.

Your clip was one of the first I listened to before I worked on my own, and I loved yours. It was my inspiration (though on a totally different topic).

I like the idea you came up with. It gives a good slice of life on the world of food. Nice job

Not only did I enjoy your topic, you also sounded very natural. I would never have guessed you were reading from a script!

Don't know what else to say. This is excellent. I wish you were producing this show now. I'd be a big fan. I really like your delivery and your topics. I hope to hear more from you in the future!

I'm hungry for more! Ok..sorry about the food puns but I love both the concept and execution of this piece. I make a habit of quietly observing the food habits of co-workers and friends since it gives far more insight into who they are than something more superficial like fashion sense or taste in TV shows. I will be highly irritated if you don't at least make it into the next round. Good luck!

I enjoyed your piece a lot and agree with your philosophy of foods. My submission is sort of along the lines of your show idea. I just have one question. How does one become a culinary anthropologist?
Please listen to my submission; I would love to know what you think?
