Let's Talk Oldies
A hybrid rock-and-roll talk/music show. Humorous, engaging phone-in discussions about rock and roll music popular between roughly 1956-1975, and then listening to a song (often NOT a Top 10 hit) appropriate to the preceding discussion. Intelligent, interesting and fun!
only you're solo -- this is a superb entertainment entry, wondering why you didn't select music as you're genre? Good luck!
Jan, thank you for your compliment. I appreciate it very much.
Funny, I've thought that the 1-second pitch for the show is "Oldies Meets Car Talk"!
I chose Entertainment because the show is more than only Music and more than only Talk. I assume the judges will straighten it out if they think Music a more appropriate category.
Tomorrow's the big day! :)
Interesting and well done. You do a good job of showcasing your knowledge and hostiness.
p.s. Have you ever heard of the Legendary Stardust Cowboy? He was supposedly the inspiration for David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust personna. His only known TV appearance was on Laugh In. He got the hook ten seconds in.

Hi Jim,
Thank you for your nice words. Always appreciated.
Actually, I think Bowie used the name "Stardust" in his Ziggy Stardust persona as a tribute to The LSC, but Bowie had the Ziggy persona in mind even without The LSC.

Good voice, nice humor, good grasp of subject. I would enjoy listening to this on a regular basis. It would be a welcome relief from my ordinarily stressful day. Good luck Steven.

I hope you have the opportunity to listen to "Let's Talk Oldies" "on a regular basis". :)
Thank you, Malcolm.
This is a smart concept. You have great hosting and interviewing skills. I don't get the breakaway sound, it doesn't fit, but if you continue, you might have something. As others mention, this is nothing new, let's hope it's something special.
Hi Tracy,
I appreciate your comment, and thank you.
I only put the "breakaway sound" in my file to allow listeners to distinguish between phone calls; otherwise, for example, I found myself talking with Larry about the importance of electric guitars and then INSTANTLY segueing into a discussion about Fabian. That was confusing, so I put the "breakaway sound" in to separate the discussions. The sound is not part of the substance of my entry at all.
you have a great voice, interesting subject matter, and fun, lighthearted aproach. great back and forth dialogue!!
Nice selection, that showed you off well.

I believe in philosophic conversation, and I believe you should believe in it too.
This would be good volley and with a writer, your idea could go a long way. Just remember there are a LOT of music buffs out there so your knowledge of music may be challenged..great idea!!

Hi Jason,
Thank you for your comment.
I don't doubt that someone will want to discuss a song that reached #81 on a Topeka station chart in 1966, and I'll have never heard of it. But "Let's Talk Oldies" is not merely an "oldies trivia" show. The talk aspect of the show is meant to be a *dialog*; if necessary, I'll help callers to tell *their* story about why the song or artist is meaningful to them. One aspect of the show is about the emotional hooks that oldies have for us, and that's valid even for songs that most people don't know. Learning about the emotional rapport the caller has with the song may well lead to a path in the discussion that's more universal.
To be clear, however, I would exclude most calls about songs, records or artists that very few people (including me) ever heard of, and that I can't somehow connect to either my own personal experiences or my large catalog of .mp3 recordings.
have an enormous wealth of musical knowledge! and it was quite funny, too. i think you're a great host, and good luck!
I was hoping to dismiss this as another deejay sound check, but I was drawn into your fascinating discussion and command of musical knowledge. A talk show ON music? Outrageous. And fabulous.
Music psychology, I love it ;-D You have a nice way of blending chat, trivia, and life lessons from songs I love.
Unsolicited advice: Next time you do a piece like this, be careful of your levels. Most of the guests were too soft to hear compared to your voice, and the drumroll between segments came out REALLY loud on these computer speakers. But that's minor - after all this contest is about hostiness not about production skills.
BTW, our local Oldies station had an '80s song on the other day, can you believe that?!

Hi Janean,
Have you ever heard a song called "1985" by the group "Bowling for Soup"? (I don't make up group names; I just print 'em.)
It's about a late-30s/early-40s woman yearning for the oldies of the 80's! IMHO it's one of the best records of the past 10 years, a wonderful song, recorded perfectly. Great rock and roll! You can hear this song (and watch the not-very-good video) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb2qATROGKQ
And thanks so much for your comment and (I presume) your vote. :)
Steven
