The art of knife throwing

Submitted by clemoult on May 6, 2007 - 5:26pm. ::

David Adamovich, aka "the Great Throwdini" is one of the best modern-day practitioners of a classic side show art - knife throwing. Craig LeMoult learned, up close, that knife throwing is no illusion - it's the real deal.

Listening to you as each knife whirled by your head was priceless. Sorry but the fact that you had me squinting my eyes with each thud was pretty hilarious...to me. Glad you made it out in one piece and did this piece.

My goodness, you certainly woke me up! I would listen to your show for sure, but please be a little more careful next time! I mean, really, does your mother know about this?

That was the most original piece of interviewing I have heard in a very
long time. Maybe only done once before on Johnny Carson with an axe.

You illustrate how radio can tell a story and put the audience right there with you. Excellent piece, I had to listen to it twice because it was so good! Great Job!

I'm glad I wasn't driving when I heard this! I blinked hard nine or ten times! I hope the judges have their eyes and ears open all the way through.

You're ready for prime-time, Craig! Great, great piece of work.

I'm not sure I'd let a guy whose resume includes being an ordained minister and pool-hall owner throw knives at me...you're brave, too!

I'm glad you did the Great Throwdini. I actually know him from *gasp* Cold Pizza from ESPN. It was great that you spoke to him and his history. Now, I want to see from you is what format you're going to do. When you get that set, hopefully you got your show.

I'm not sure I have the guts to let someone throw knives at me even if it is to win the radio quest talent contest. Kudos buddy.

What I admire most about this is that you KNEW somehow that this visual situation would translate somehow even more terrifyingly to audio! It's also well written and edited. I'm in NYC - I hope you call me and let me buy you a latte.

Craig, someone just pointed me to your piece in reference to a message I posted asking about sound effects.

NICE job in putting the listener in the story. I really like it.

This is one of my favorites!
I've had a great last half hour, found some of the best yet on here! This is just awesome listening, Craig. Great topic, excellent recording. Reminds me of when I saw Penn & Teller live and they went to great pains to make it fakey and jokey and then Teller just threw the knives finally and it was clearly not a "trick board", as you say. Great story, you're lucky he's so Great!
My hat. It's off! To you, sir! You!

It's kind of like the show "Jackass" adapted for audio...relies in physical stunts of bodily endangerment to engage the audience. Entertaining, but a near miss.

Submitted by clemoult on May 14, 2007 - 9:35am.

This is an interesting and valid criticism. The full story, which was 9 and a half minutes, was much more of a profile of Throwdini, as well as of a woman who was interested in becoming his "target girl." With a 2-minute limit I had to cut out most of that, but wanted to use the audio of knife throwing from the target's perspective. So, yes, it does come off a bit like a stunt as edited. But if you're interested, the full story is at: http://www.prx.org/pieces/14077

As my students would say, "Not safe, Ms.Davis!" This clip was highly amusing and deliciously daring. I found myself whincing at the sounds of metal striking and chuckling along with the host's nervous laughter. I don't think I'd be brave enough to interview "The Great Throw-dini." Way to go!

Wow. Action Radio. Fascinating use of audio as visual medium. I haven't heard any other entries that've had the guts to try that.

My favorite part was him (probably looking over his shoulder and) kinda offhandedly saying "Don't move."
