The Talent Quest/ The Fab Five

Hi. Just curious if this "Talent Quest" operation isn't merely an online popularity contest?

... I mean, I know who's in my "fab 5" on this site!

Despite what this contest started out to be, talent or popularity, it has become something more.

It has, in my view, become a wonderful example of how individuals with diverse opinions and backgrounds can come together in a thoughtful and mutually creative way. Sure, there are those who relish the opportunity to use this event to rail against others, put down or abuse contestants or those who comment -- but they are truly the minority.

This, in an admittedly oversimplistic way, is what the future could be, if we all came together for the common good. It could happen -- it only takes two people to start a conversation, and when listening is included, come to understanding. And understanding is where peace begins.

it's not just public radio or even this contest that brings people together... it's words, Especially spoken words, tossed out into the universe... to be caught by someone who takes the to really listen.

Indeed. Public radio is supposed to be about bringing communities together. That's what makes it vital and such a force for good. That's why it is my life.

Wonderful comment, Edwin!

It's good to know that there's still so much interest in Public Radio. No matter how much people push television, podcasting, and everything else under the sun, radio is still the most available electronic medium. For a few bucks, you can buy an AM/FM radio and keep in touch with the world. No need for an internet connection or high-definition and surround sound.

I'm not knocking the other media, but to me radio will always be the media of the people, and Public Radio a shining example of the ideals this country was founded on.

Keep public radio alive and free!
