Round 1 - Meet & Greet or Show Pitch?

Submitted by BURNcast on May 7, 2007 - 1:26pm. ::

I'm unclear about the guidelines for Round One.

On the Hostiness Description page I read, "To enter the first round of the Talent Quest...upload two minutes or less of audio that reflects your personality and uses your voice. That’s it."

This seems pretty simple to me.

Yet, I'm hearing a lot of folks pitching show ideas in this round and this seems to be rather different than simply making a good first impression.

Is this appropriate? Does this reflect "hostiness"? Or is it just me?

Please advise.

I don't think that there is anything in the rules that says how you are to show your hostiness, and 2 minutes of "this is who I am and my favorite hobbies" is not a good way to demonstrate hostiness at all. I used a faux-show as a way to show that, were I to have a radio show, I'd be the hostiest with the mostiest. The idea for the show is merely a tool for entrants without a show or past tapes to demonstrate their voice, personality, interests and style. It is perfectly clear to me that we are not being judged on the idea, but on the hostiness. Ditto, someone who tells a short story or introduces music is not being judged on the content, but on the way it is presented.

Thus, I argue, those of us who have used a faux-show as a way of showing our talents are not in breach of the criteria at all. The criteria says nothing about how, just what it needs to show.

The other point of view!

Good and valid points to be sure, Deborah.

I gave your entry four stars because you're one of those who showed hostiness (along with a host of other qualities) while presenting a show idea. There are many who don't. Have you listened to a lot of other entries?

A faux-show situation set up to show your personality is one thing; a two-minute pitch that's all about the show only tells us what the person likes. And that's not hostiness.

I totally agree that two minutes of "Hi I'm Bob, I like turtles..." is not hostiness either ;-D 400+ people are putting forward something they think is "hostiness" and it's great seeing the variety in defining that term.

I've been hearing a lot of "buy my show idea" entries in this contest. Like you, it strikes me as off the mark. Why shoot yourself in the foot by sending in an entry that doesn't meet the criteria of the contest?

That said, some of the "pitch" entries are strong enough to demonstrate hostiness even though they don't directly address the request made by the organizers of the PRTQ. When you're good, you're good.

Eventually, my guess is there will be well over 500 entries to judge. A fair system for sending some entries to the bottom of the pile will have to arise in order to deal with the sheer quantity. "Meets contest criteria" could well be at the top of that checklist.

You can follow the directions to a tee or you can do your own thing. Either might be the right choice. But hey, that's Life, eh?

I chose to follow the directions to a tee - but there have been a heap of fabulous entrants that chose NOT to follow directions to a tee AND MADE IT WORK. In my opinion. Which isn't worth much since I'm not a Judge.

Just be yourself. What works for you? You know "you" better than WE know you.

Frankly, in Life, it doesn't matter a whit what you do. You will always make the wrong choice. Accept that, work with it and move on. Teehee!

BURNcast, I wanted to link you to a previous forum topic that went into great detail about this same issue. Problem is, as of this writing, the administrators seem to be playing around with the site because all the old ways of getting to previous topics are no longer accessible.

People are not known for perfection when it comes to following directions.

Sooooo... unfortunately, many people failed to accomplish the task put to them. Many submissions show no hostiness at all, they don't even show an attempt at showing hostiness.

Just do your part... go for it!

... and the bottom line is to SHOW PERSONALITY.

Some of the "show ideas" I've heard are really windows into the entrant's passions and personality. So you CAN show 'hostiness' while proposing a show idea, but it takes real talent to pull it off.

In general, I think putting a show idea into the contest is like submitting a photograph into your paper's "Letters to the Editor" section.

One more note about show ideas: Talk to your local public radio station or a low-power FM. They might be interested in providing studio time and an engineer to help you develop it. It completely depends on the format and Program Director, but at the very least (s)he might be able to point you in the right direction.

Also, check out PRX. A fabulous resource for anybody with a solid programming idea.

Thanks, Steve.

Following the rules is somewhat important though. Failure to do so could result in disqualification and all I can say to that is a big fat :-(

"Hostiness." I like that word. It's so, so...cute!

I used to be a tour guide once for Universal Studios. "Your right is my left, so for the purposes of today's tour when I'm talking about things on your right I'll say "On my side of the tram." And when I'm talking about things on your left, I'll say "On the driver's side of the tram. OK everybody? Please remember to keep all hands and feet inside the tram until the tram has come to a full and complete stop."

So like does "guidiness" translate to "hostiness"?

Hostiness. Hostiness. Hmmm...let me work on my hostiness-ness a bit more.

Well I had to look it up on the Wikipedia, but guidiness is a definite subset of hostiness. There is an element of proprietariness, that a host exudes that a guide doesn't. There - I hope that clears it up. Next.

Aahhh...thanks Steve.

There's also a sense of "mostiness" that the judges are seeking along with "hostiness".

I'm sure these characteristics probably precludes "guidiness", but oh well. I believe I can reposition myself in this area.
