... even as we speak.

How about you, how much reviewing and voting are you doing of your peers. Are you making the most of this community? What is your predisposition towards pulling on an oar? I’m not saying, I am only asking.

Tell everyone (by email, by flyer, whatever), participate in the forums, vote on other people's entries and comment on them. Be a part of the process (but you already seem to have a handle on that because you had the good sense to post this topic : )

Good luck!

I've noticed a few entries where it's clear the contestant has set some kind of unnatural comment machine into motion on his or her behalf. The comments sound more like recommendations attached to a resume than genuine reactions to the entry. It leaves me feeling a little manipulated. Has anyone else noticed these?

The really intriguing entries seem to have a life of their own. Comments come in because listeners connect with those pieces and want to respond. I often scan the "Recent Comments" section on the right of the screen and follow those that look interesting. I've found some great entries doing that. Comments beget comments.

Submitted by Sleeves on May 8, 2007 - 12:51pm.

I have a lot of comments from people who listen to my show. I didn't really expect comments and was surprised that people went out of their way to register to vote.

I think that bringing "fans" along might seem like some kind of tampering, but from my perspective inviting those who know me as a "host" to support me is just a no-brainer. I can't imagine not inviting them.

I've supposed all along that the comment section to be more an extension of the message board than a tool for the judges. I've heard some great entries that didn't have a lot of comments and I can't imagine those persons going unnoticed because of it.

I have noticed what you have noticed Jennifer....but comments alone wont win someone this contest, so I just comment honestly and keep on keeping on!

Submitted by Jennifer Bangley on May 8, 2007 - 10:41am.

A good entry is a good entry. I mention the canned comment thing more as a cautionary tale: It's transparent and (to me) a bit of a turn off. Don't shoot yourself in the foot. That's all.

Submitted by nurmihusa on May 8, 2007 - 10:33am.

... to successfully getting friends (and fans for those already with shows) to come "vote" for them. Can't ban that sort of thing. Nor should we. Someone who comes to this with a built-in listenership is a plus, I expect. From - ahem - management's point of view.

A couple of the comments on my entry are from friends, when I asked them to listen to my entry. They're quite glowing and I appreciate them, and I've thanked them off the site ;-) Other friends emailed me on the entry. But the comments that I really appreciate are from the other contest members whose entries I've heard too. It's a great community here.

I'm not suggesting the practice of asking friends to vote and comment is wrong. I'm just interested to bump into entries where those comments seem stiff and scripted. The boquet of comments accompanying your entry, for example, seems genuine -- as it should be, for your entry is terrific!

Submitted by nurmihusa on May 8, 2007 - 10:47am.

...actually, if you do the math, as it were, half those entries under my name are my own because I respond to responses. And when one considers the "conversations" that have developed - well, I don't have so many discrete (or discreet for that matter, teehee) commenters.

I wasn't suggesting you wanted them canned, but one can sense that unexpressed sentiment rise up now and again around here. And understandably so. But claques and cliques and so forth are a fact of life. Learned that in elementary school. Also learned they can't be counted on. Public Opinon is a will'o'the'wisp.

Chad and I have had this very discussion because a number of my positive comments on my entry come from my neck of the woods. Luckily for me the people who have made these comments really do support what I do and they believe in me. But they also seem to be commenting as much or more on my past work to date than on this submission. But the heart is there and so is the effort.

It's a bummer if the comments (either about your submission or in response to a forum topic) make you feel uneasy in regards to people's intentions. You might also end up running into people who are out and out mean but I hope you that you don't.

You're right, personality probably isn't going to win this thing but it's all tied together. I agree with another contestant,Steve, who said that people who tend to engage with others will probably make better hosts. Everyone has some agenda or another but there are also a lot of good people on this thing who are really enjoying being a part of the whole process. Only you can sift through what's genuine and what's not. But if you're gaining valuable information and effort from people, where's the problem?
Good luck in your endeavors,
kb

I was unaware of your entry when I made the comment above. Hope you didn't think I was aiming anything at you. The beauty of it? Now I've listened to (and enjoyed!) your entry. Fun.

That's what it comes down to, Katie. Teehee!

Hey, you have a serious fanbase and it's clear you've worked hard for it and you've earned it. Bravo to you! And you're not alone. There are more than a few entrants that come loaded for bear, as it were. This is a very good thing from public broadcastings pov.

As for Steve's comment about entrants who embrace the fora being folks who make better hosts. Yep. I agree.

You know what's so amazing? I've only recently committed myself by saying this is what I want to aim for (public radio). But I have a number of other creative things I do and I can't do them all so I said to my husband, "I need something to say hey you're on the right track." I found out about this contest within about ten minutes of saying that. After the initial, what if excitement wore off I finally figured out it's about people. This contest prompted those amazing comments from friends and peers-- things I might never have heard. And believe it or not I'm not normally a forum poster, but I've found some cool people with similar aspirations and often some great advice. This all might sound corny but it's helped me realize I really am on the right path.

Still wanna win, though!

Hey, I'm an actress, I fully admit I perform for the applause. :-D

And the comments have been great applause! It's part of what makes me coming back again and again to read the site.

Katie, who says you can't do it all? 8-} Let's see, this week I'm learning my songs and rehearsing for a two-woman musical, reading/recording a book for the radio, writing and producing my weekly Matinee show, working with two other women on an a cappella group, creating two advertisements for station-related things, an interview with a college student on public radio for her final paper, a lot of website updates, three recordings of potential PRTQ contestants, and spending 'quality time' with my husband and preschooler. Who says we can't do it all?
(Oh, that's right, we can't sleep.)

As someone whose comments could possibly be construed as "canned" I have to say that only a handful are from friends who found the site with my prompting. Other regular listeners seem to have wandered here on their own. I think my favorite comments, though, are the ones from people who are hearing me for the first time and are genuinely enthusiastic about hearing more. If nothing else, it's helping my little podcast to reach more ears. It's really encouraging and part of what keeps me coming back to this ad hoc community of public radio enthusiasts.

I LOVE that about this contest, I'm getting leads on all sorts of podcasts and sites that I never would have discovered otherwise. Have to wait until after a few aural projects are done to explore more, but I'm really looking forward to hearing more from you and other podcasters too!
