Welcome to Kidville

Submitted by HannahPalin on May 9, 2007 - 12:15pm. ::

I became a mother at the ripe old age of 41. Over the last two years and a half years, I've discovered that there is a whole new world out there that I never knew existed and I find it fascinating. I've come to call it Kidville.

And I am thoroughly enchanted with your clip. You give me hope (I'm a childless, single woman of child-bearing age who just got a puppy to supress the "clock"). But anyway, I really enjoyed your enthusiasm, your voice, writing, content, and of course the clip of your kid at the end, "Mommy, ...", "What-y..." That was a nice way to end it. Really nice work. Do you have a parenting podcast? If not, you should. I'd get my sister to listen (she's a new mom and is soooo hungry for information).

Whatever the net-listening equivalent of page-turning is, is what your entry had me doing! Your voice is wonderfully natural, I could hear you smile, and it kept me listening to the end! Congrats on your new Momlife, I've got a few friends who are just arriving in Kidville now, so I enjoy watching from the periphery!
Great entry! Best of luck to you!

Yes, Hannah. Nothing like having "one of your own", to guide you into another world of charm and playtime, and...limit setting and immunizations, and teething, etc. It's all good and I enjoyed, out of the gate, your hook.

Best to you!

I like the concept and the way you let us in on your enthusiasm. The sound effects were great too!

It's great to hear such an articulate celebration of the dawning joys of Kidville... even for someone who knows she'll never venture there! (And I loved the bookending, too.) More please!

And you take on a subject that is so important to so many.

Thanks for your entry.

Hannah I think you are the neatest person! I'm sending this to my sister, who's also a mother "of advanced age" She'll love it! I too love Kidville. Krysta brought a Matchbox car home and I could not help but "park it" on the toy shelf. Have you ever heard the theme song to Arthur?

Submitted by klbothwell on May 11, 2007 - 10:56am.

This was a lot of fun to listen to, Hannah! You've got the NPR Voice if I've ever heard one, you write beautifully and deliver the text beautifully, and I love the Dom's laughter and "Mommy" in the background. And hey, any 44-year-old who can identify every single Thomas the Tank engine name by site gets my vote!

Hannah, great entry! Coherent, for starters, despite the demands of mommyhood. Warm and funny. You definitely have some hostiness goin' on.

P.S. How's the potty training going?

Submitted by HannahPalin on May 12, 2007 - 1:18am.

No potty training yet!! I keep waiting for him to get interested in the elimination process, so to speak, but no such luck. Everyone says to be patient and wait. So I'm waiting. Oy! Thanks for comments! Much appreciated!

That was cute and fun and uplifting - you've got a warm, energetic voice, and I felt like we were having a conversation at your kitchen table, which is fantastic (except that I now have to send my slacks out for dry cleaning from the oatmeal schmears). Nice work!

Didn't think anyone could make me want to vacation in Kidville, but you leave me wanting more! You are such a natural. I'm waiting for the next installment.

Hannah, it has been a pleasure watching you blossom into motherhood. You have spoken, knowledgeable and concisely with a true and clear voice. It is lovely to hear you as you are in this moment of your life!

So in the sequel do we get to hear Dom's perspective? Great work and know that I'm looking forward to hearing more.

I'm 32, never been to Kidville, but thouroughly enjoyed listening!

I know that I'll go there sometime in the future and, like you, be on the more mature side of motherhood.

I look forward to hopefully hearing more!

Best of Luck to you!

I love the way you've used your son's voice to bookend this entry - the laughing sound really grabs the listener, and every mother/parent can relate to being pulled away from a task by a child's plea for attention. I think you demonstrated hostiness by the bucketful - and if you don't make it to Round Two, I hope NPR takes you on as a commentator with regular updates from Kidville.
