What has surprised you about the entries in general?

Submitted by dknuckey on May 10, 2007 - 1:42pm. ::

I've been surprised by how many of the entrants seem to already have a show elsewhere...

I've been amazed by how many really really great entries there are. I can see how they'll get it down to the top 100 or so, but how will they get it down to 10? It'll be tough.

And you? What has surprised you?

I need to listen to more entries but I get the feeling that everyone just wants to be on This American Life, which, ironically, seems to have become the new cliche.

Call me Pollyanna, but I think it takes a whole lotta guts (mind you intestinal fortitude, not the greasy grimy gopher kind) to create, produce, and in most cases direct yourself and run the board not to mention (but here I go) have your act together enough to send it in under deadline.

I like the creativity. I think the first round should be about presence and intent...I am sure the challenges will bring out more originality.

And just for the record--seriously dude, (as we are oft to say out here in Santa Barbara), never call me PollyAnna.

I hope this doesn't sound crass because I certainly don't mean it to be.
I'm noticing that a lot of the entries sound like they could already fold into a segment of currently produced programs. I'm hearing a more "correspondience" if you will.

Am I wrong or misreading what I'm hearing?

Submitted by Steve Stokes on May 12, 2007 - 4:54am.

well, at least I hear the same thing in a lot of the entries.

1. I thought there'd be MORE entrants.

2. I get the feeling some people are recording their spots on their cell phone.

3. Strangely, I think the age range is evenly spread out, which is surprising...and encouraging.

4. People love their public radio. Yea!

5. Seems that the fact that someone already has a radio show on the air (not a podcast) should sort of disqualify them. Or maybe I'm being too competitive...

It would be interesting to see a breakdown of entrants by age, gender, urban/suburban/rural, etc. I'm guessing those of us over 40 are in the minority...

I hope you guys dont think that being 40 or older makes you old or over the hill??
my girlfriend is 40 and she's every bit as active and "hip" as you say, as I am.
theres nothing old about 40's to me!

Unfortunately, the world evolves around the young and the restless. But I'm guessing over forty is still cool and hip (I think we coined that phrase).

You'd be suprised how many of us old duffers (heh) are entered. I'm 41 and I've been harboring a desire to be on the air since I was 10!

I can't believe I've entered! Please listen, vote and comment. Thanks.

I've been on this site now for at least a few days before I actually signed up and then put in a submission. I've since spent nearly every waking minute on here listening and voting on every entry that comes up. I can't leave a comment on most of them or I'll never get anything else done. But I have to say...I have huge respect for everyone on here and am following what you all are saying. I'd truly love to do an interview with nearly everyone!

I just wanted to point out that I do think that there are a lot more folks participating (at least on the voting and comment end). I have really been enjoying voting and tend to leave comments when I'm really moved by something (or I just haven't gotten to it yet). I do find though while at work very little time to actively participate and so my voting time is left to my at home hours. I think my husband is starting to suspect something ;-) Anyway, that's just my 2 cents!

I, for one, have been really surprised by just how much I enjoy listening to everyone's entries. It's been like an addiction! It seems I'm not the only one who shares that sentiment...

Submitted by Steve Stokes on May 10, 2007 - 2:07pm.

a) the number of really really excellent submissions. There's probably 30 to 40 people who rate being in the top 10.

b) the number of really really, no way in hell can this person host a national show, submissions. Easily the bottom half, (250 - 300), saw the help wanted sign up and said, "well I can talk, how about hiring me."

what surprises me is the "lack" of participation...I mean think about it, there are only a handfull of people who are involved in everything...from forum conversation, to helpful advice, to commenting and voting and who are on this site every day, participating.
an example of some of these people are
Jenean
Linda
Steve
Nurmi
Elizabeth
Katie
Bear
myself and several more....but considering thers is over 500 entrants,
10-20 people isn't alot if you ask me...
I mean these are the people who are wanting the whole aspect of being a host...to do more than just talk on the radio...they want involement....weather they win or not...watch and see how many of "these" people cross over to round 2.
thats just my opinion.

Chad, you left me out!

Submitted by chadbullock on May 10, 2007 - 3:22pm.

sorry Jennifer...but to clarify a little...I dont think judges will favor people for "commenting" but they are looking at overall participation because lets not forget there is work outside the program you will be hosting....you WILL have to help people out- you WIll have to answer questions...and be opinionated because thats the personality of the host...not reading a script.....hosting is a full time job that has many requirments and responsibilities...check out the list Steve posted on that. if your not willing to do a little of everything - would that be the person you want for a host?? I would'nt I want someone who cares and does everything they can and participates in everyway they can...not just talk to the mic for 30 minutes and goes home...but that's just me

Submitted by Jennifer Bangley on May 10, 2007 - 3:42pm.

That's a relief. I think. I was worried I was over-participating and coming across as some brown-nosing point junkie. I just can't quit listening to the entries.

I think I understand what you're getting at Chad. I agree that you need to have more than talent to be heard in the world. You have to have gumption. For instance, I just started an internship program at my station and I'm giving the first chance to this guy who just keeps showing up at 6 in the morning wanting to hang out and see how I do what I do. That's gumption. He just really, really wants it. And, I know he won't take the opportunity for granted. He will work hard and won't complain about not getting paid to work. But that's just me, and my internship program.

I think there would be more than a couple of really disapointed people if the judges showed preferential treatment to those who are participating in the forums. I'm not posting comments and participating in the forum to turn the judges' eyes. Rather, I'm doing it to network with y'all -- to read and hear what other like minded people are thinking. And, just today I had another thought that perhaps this is a unique opportunity for us to show some of the people already working in national public radio what we like and don't like about what we hear -- what we want to hear more of, and who we want to hear from.

... and there's calculated participation.

It's pretty clear when it's calculated and when it's real. Real counts. Calculated doesn't. And hey, real is fun. That's why we do it. RIGHT?! Right!

Teehee!
