Do you have a favorite musical stage show? A favorite movie musical? Or a favorite song from a show?

I don't know what those seven brothers for seven brides did to me when I was young, but Oklahoma and the like make my skin crawl - perhaps it was all those bad high school renditions I saw. Actually pretty much hate all musicals except Godspeel - and taht was because I saw it when I was 10 and the nice performers threw something out in the audience that I caught.

I'm not surprised that this talented community of aspiring radio hosts has an appreciation for musical theatre... it's a driving force in my life. I love that sense of enhanced reality that the music adds. One of my favorites happens to be one that I wrote: http://www.davidresnick.us/memoriesofanonjewishchildhood2/ - You might enjoy checking it out. PS - I've really enjoyed reading ALL the insightful, discerning, and encouraging comments on the myriad of topics on this site. This is quite a group!

...I do believe that West Side Story represents the apotheosis of American creative genius in the 20th Century. Between Bernstein, Sondhiem, Laurents, Robbins and arranger Sid Ramin (among others), you had the greatest talents in their fields collaborating to synthesize a towering and complete artistic moment: popular, populist, and staggeringly good. All that and Chita Rivera, too!

Do I listen to it as much I as I listen to, say, A Chorus Line, Annie, Runaways or The Wiz? No. But when I do, I'm reminded of why the US seemed to dominate pop-culture for so many years.

Considering that the idea came from the amazing choreographer, and the dances are what make the gang fights real, it is the ultimate Jerome Robbins show IMHO.

Never heard of Runaways. In the same vein as The Me Nobody Knows?

The musical is a true American art form. We deserve to hear and know more about it.

Little Me? I'd love to get my hands on a copy of that original cast album (Sid Caesar!) or a reissue CD, or heck just a set of MP3s.

I'd never heard of Song of Singapore. Thanks for the tip, I love swing music.

Ragtime is true bliss
A Little Night Music too
That is my haiku

That was so dumb of me, I must be completely exhausted. I worked a bat mitzvah tonight. A woman had two cosmopolitains and started yelling that her food was cold. Yesterday at the bar mitzvah the kids lit their place cards on fire.

Ragtime was the highlight of our first trip to NYC. A Little Night Music is simply wonderful... I keep wondering if my little girl is going to take the "Ordinary Mothers" part of "Glamorous Life" to heart :-(

Extrordinary

I'm sure you are NOT an "ordinary mother."

I can't wait to see "The Color Purple." Does that have an exclamation point at the end? Most musicals do!

If there was a musical about my life, it would be called, "Yikes!"

Act 1 is great, and about half of Act 2. (My main quibble is that Mister should get a rip-roarin' blues song in Act 2) Have a wonderful time!

Sweeney ... My dream is to do all of Angela Lansbury's roles, including Mrs. Lovett.

Diana Ross played Dorothy in the movie...
I think that explains everything.

No, the stage production is definitely the HIT I think and the real singers and performers gave it what the screen could not...with exception of Nipsy Russell and even Michael...they laid it down!

which took half an hour to read, finish to start. (With time out to read posters' bios.)

Musicals are so often sentimental and goofy. I love 'em. I've sat in orchestra pits and played dozens of shows; hundreds of performances; mostly community theaters. Many of my favorite shows have been mentioned. One that I didn't see was "Will Rogers Follies."
One of my favorite movie musicals is "Flower Drum Song."

Submitted by Janean on May 27, 2007 - 9:14pm.

I love the 'new' trend to put the orchestra onstage in some way, such as the bandstand for Chicago. I was going to include Annie Get Your Gun but I just realized I was on the front far side of the stage when it came to town, so I had a clear view of the musicians arranged in a tier on the wings. Touring shows use mainly local musicians for non-specialized instruments (one neat exception was the wind player for The Lion King.) So I get a kick out of seeing friends and aquaintances up on the stage. :-)

I know, sometimes we actors/singers have blamed the pit for our screwups. "They went so FAST!" "Can't the drummer be quieter? He's drowning me out!" Then there's the infamous dropping of a half verse or coming in two beats early.... Thank you to pit players everywhere!

All depends on the day and week asked. One I would not mind seeing again is Company--- (shows you my age) --music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
Last year I was exposed to the Producers and Wicked.
Side note --we carry a show called “Broadway’s Biggest Hits” every Sunday morning
