A Poet's Day Job

Submitted by bobholman on May 10, 2007 - 1:44pm. ::

Can a poet get a radio gig? First two Found Poems: one a response to Homeland Security in the subway, the other was rescued from Spam. Then a taste of a poem masquerading as a song – “Love Lake,” the “breakout single” from my new spoken word album, “The Awesome Whatever.”

Of course. Who else? It's obvious.

Bob Holman knows
how to keep
the ol' bluesy
day job.

He keeps his feet
walking --
one foot in front
of the other,

cuz a poet
has to keep
that ol' day job.

p.s. where do i vote for bob?

Bob's stuff is my tonic...my medicine....my "i know its not just me.." stuff....please let him loose more often, for much longer and to more people...otherwise I fear we may loose him to the post of Poet Laureate as I hear he's big in London right now......I vote for him everytime.....

p.s. As a former Radio Producer in London, (two three hour live shows everyday, five days a week for seven years), I feel my vote counts for at least twenty people.....(producers always know best)
....EMPLOY THIS MAN.......IMMEDIATELY!!

public radio has been one of the last places for poetry on the radio, and with even that, the landscape's pretty arid and not very diverse. Bob's generosity, love for poetry, and energy will go a great way in sustaining the vitality of poetry and radio and poetry on the radio!

Dear Poetry Meshuggah ...

I am impressed. I mean,

way back in the summer of 95,
when we first met, I already could
see & hear, you have a strong real vision,
but I never ever had the slightest idea
you would get that close to the bank
... I might add ... of the river.

Btw, I voted for ya, although
I don't like advocats at all, my dear
hopefully more than "just (Autsch!) ny"
... poadvoman

Just send me a note, in case you'd like to
read another of those storytelling emails from

retired slammaster "the myrmidon" yours truly,

Something amazing happens every time my ear knocks into holman’s voice. Not only will I keep my ear to npr for bob’s show but this will be required listening for my college poetry and creative writing students and mega-extra credit for composition students! What a great way for students and the rest of us to see that poetry is a lifestyle! And bob holman is a walking singing toe-tapping poem. Thanks bob and npr for this brilliant show idea!

Bob Holman has done more than any other person in this country to make poetry a living form in our everyday lives, as opposed to a rarefied form that is only for a self-appointed elite. In a parallel universe, he'd be the Poet Laureate, and he may be some day. For now, let's at least let him take over some of our airwaves!!!

poet, cultural activist, social activist, entrepreneur, comic, oral historian of this country's silent war against its own creative children, father figure to countless, myself included. His door is always open and so is his mind. Cuter than the child of Ira Glass and Susan Stamberg with a voice sweeter than Tennessee [his home state] Sour Mash Sipping Whiskey. Bob Holman is your man, Man.

Bob Holman is one our great poets. He gets everyone jazzed into believing in the power of words to make and change the world.

And he has such style. I want to be able to wear a hat the way he does.

I can't think of anybody better to represent modern American poetry on NPR than Bob Holman. Dedicated, passionate, erudite, and yet incredibly genuine, Bob has been the steak and potatoes of the poetry scene for decades. He's seen it all, done it all, and can talk about it with grace and a dash of jazz. Having Bob on NPR would help to show America how how rich our poetic life continues to be. Hire this man! --Mongo, host of the IndieFeed Performance Poetry Channel (http://performancepoetry.indiefeed.com)

If anyone can rescue radio from the filty dust bin of time... it would be Mr. Holman.

Show him the stone and he'll take the sword out of it.

Ahhhh, about time...such a natural marriage, Bob + NPR! How many flowery fabulousnesses to say about a mountain, one that moves...mountains. Bob has the perfect combo of smarts, history, activism, showmanship and love of all things poetry, to be the living poem. If NPR wants something fresh while connected to poetry's lineage...Bob's the one!

This guy is a translator of Babel. He can understand the chaos and confusion of a thousand subway conversations, filter and magnify the whispered secrets of a hundred lonely singers and clarify the ingredients of Duck Soup.
Bob has the natural talent to Say surely what others merely hesitate to think.

NPR's poetry content has always been amazingly lame - an occasional review of academic retards and dullards, the tedious rubbish from Garrison K. and that's it. Bob Holman could bring a breath of fresh air and some real poetry.
