I’ve worked with 20+ theatre companies. I love acting, but have become increasingly interested in other mediums as venues for storytelling.
One of the things that I enjoyed most about this project is that the “characters” are all real & the “unexpected realizations” evolved naturally out of the interviews.
Audio is a new venture for me – terrifying & thrilling simultaneously.
- What's your favorite public radio show?
There's a StoryCorps piece which is a particular favorite of mine.
There had been a shooting. A child was killed. The child’s classmates were interviewing his grandmother. “What do you miss most about Jimmy?”
The grandmother’s response: “That boy had the whitest teeth ... When that boy smiled ... ”
As she spoke, her vocal pitch crept higher. It was the sound of fighting the need to cry, suppressing it, speaking through it. The words get out, but as the emotion bubbles underneath, it alters the pitch and the voice wavers. Beautiful.
I got teary-eyed. This 5 sec clip had captured what theatre frequently tries to attain: a moment of unexpected emotional honesty, expressed through surprising words. The “host” in that story was a 9-year-old boy. His question made it possible to hear this woman’s response in a way that was surprising, simple and honest. I was humbled.
My favorite public radio shows either focus on storytelling or conversations with artists. My favorite hosts are conduits: channels for hearing people’s stories & views. Many public radio hosts do this. Ira Glass does this time and time again, effortlessly.
- What's your secret talent?
I'm a good salsa dancer.
