Bio

Oh, the usual: several years of classical piano instruction as a child - played on the radio at 8 years old, picked up guitar and played rock'n'roll as a teen, apprenticed as a chef while attending high school, attended Penn State and Indiana University, joined the USAF and graduated from the Defense Language Institute's Immersion program as a Russian linguist, spent some time in Japan (can't talk about that), drove the Al-Can highway from Alaska to the'lower 48', spent several years touring the country playing back-up with many known rock acts, got off the road, got married, started a recording studio and production company, had kids, won a bunch of ADDY awards for ad spots and commercial music, got divorced, scored a short film, produced a few up'n'coming musical acts, arranged and produced a ton of tunes for artists you've never heard of... uhhmmm, y'know that kind of stuff.

What's your favorite public radio show?

I have several: A Prairie Home Companion; Fresh Air; Car Talk; This American Life; Talk Of The Nation; Science Friday; Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me; What Do You Know ( correct answer, 'not much, you?'); and all of the music programming - classical, jazz, blues, roots, you name it.
Actually, I have no life so I listen to far too much Public Radio. Sad, isn't it?

Okay, you found me out. I really DO have a life, but I really DO listen to a lot of Public Radio, too.

What's your secret talent?

I'm a 'master' kitchen magician.

Wait for it.........

I make food disappear. Ba da boom.

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

"Make Me Smile". Yep, that old song by Chicago. Only I'm hearing it as a downtempo, slow-ish blues thang, in 6/8 time with snake-y guitar licks, a Hammond organ and Leslie speaker wailing away on the chorus, a little blues harp answering the vocal...can you hear it? That's what's stuck in my head, but maybe now it's also stuck in yours. Hehehehe.

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

Wiiiinnnnnnnnddddddddddddd.

What's your favorite sound memory?

The 'squeak and slam shut' of the old screen door on the back door of the house in which I grew up. I heard that sound a zillion times as a child. The sound of that old screen door gave me the freedom to leave when and for where I must, but it's 'squeak and slam' would always welcome me back, too. It's a grounding sound - reminding me of where I came from. I won't ever hear that old screen door again except in my mind's ear. It's sound exists only in the pages of memory now, kind of like a dried, but cherished flower, tucked between the pages of the family Bible. I hope that doesn't sound too sappy. I think the truth can sound sappy sometimes.

Which station do you listen to most?
SDPB/MPR. I'm on the border.
