Bio

Jeff is an assistant professor of literature at American University in Washington, DC, where he teaches film and world literature. He lives in Takoma Park, Maryland with his wife Angela, two-year-old son Xan and cat Vega. His interests range to include cooking, World Cup Soccer, late-spring warm thunderstorms and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He is a sucker for movies, preferably good ones.

What's your secret talent?

Unintentionally, my laughter often corresponds to how it is sometimes written out onomatopoeically: hee hee hee, ho ho ho.

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

First of all, I thought this was called an "earworm." The song that usually gets stuck in my head, even if I haven't heard it in a while, is "Human Behavior" by Bjork. This usually happens when I am walking, and all of a sudden my feet rhythmically start pounding the pavement like the big timpani that opens the song. (There, great: now it's stuck in my head again. Thanks.)

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

An ambulance siren, followed by the quick, intense patter of small feet. I live on a main road not too far from a hospital and right down the street from a fire station. Whenever an ambulance (or fire truck) goes by, my two-year-old son, who is obsessed with anything with four wheels, runs to stare out the door. Much to his glee, this happens many times per day.

What's your favorite sound memory?

In elementary school, my class was asked to write out the preamble to the U.S. Constitution for a quiz. I distinctly remember hearing 24 little voices (one of which was my own) quietly humming the Schoolhouse Rock tune "We, the People" throughout the classroom in order to make sure we didn't forget anything -- much to the confusion of our teacher, who apparently had not been keeping up with Saturday Morning Cartoons.
