Bio

Tamara Keith started her career in public radio before she was old enough to drive. 4 cars and hundreds of thousands of miles later, she is the Sacramento Region Reporter for KQED. She's also worked as the State Capital Bureau reporter for KPCC (Southern California Public Radio), as a general assignment reporter and sometimes host at WOSU in Columbus, OH and as the Central Valley Bureau Correspondent for The California Report. As a teenager, Tamara was a regular essayist for NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday. Her stories are heard on NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Weekend Edition Saturday/Sunday, Day to Day and Marketplace.

When she's not making money for her radio work, Tamara hosts and produces B-Side Radio. It's a podcast and public radio show found on PRX (and occasionally on a very cool public radio station near you).

What's your favorite public radio show?

B-Side Radio, of course. But I also love All Things Considered, TAL, Fresh Air, Day to Day and just about everything on your public radio dial. I'm a total junkie...but in a healthy, not crazy way.

What's your secret talent?

Hmmmm. When I was a kid, I was a legit model and commercial actress. Now, I'm the manager of a softball team, play roller hockey, do triathlons and cook an amazing brisket.

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

"I Will Survive" - The version by Cake. I've been known to sing it out loud at around mile 10 of a half marathon, right after butchering "Eye of the Tiger."

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

Barking. Oh Jezebel, our Dalmatian will bark at everything, including the sound of a doorbell in a Dominoes commercial. It's not too bad, really. But it can be pretty annoying when I'm trying to voice a story in my closet.

What's your favorite sound memory?

The most recent one happened yesterday, I was at UC Berkeley to speak on a panel about radio news. While walking to the event, I happened upon a rubics cube competition. Imagine the sound of 20 very intense, rather nerdy guys all frantically trying to get their cubes solid on all sides.

Which station do you listen to most?
KQED followed by my ipod
