Bio

I was born in Pittsburgh, the son of a pharmacist, whose father had immigrated there from Russia in 1917 and a mother, whose family were dirt farmers in North Carolina. I lived in Johnstown PA until I was 12 and we moved to DC where my father had found work, leaving the rust bowl for the nation's capital. Growing up in DC I have seen it and myself transformed. I am an avid Sci-Fi fan (favorite author Kurt Vonnegut), work in Information Technology writing software for hospitals, love to hike and run, have an MS in Telecommunications Mgt and a BA in Speech, am a political activist and consider myself a traditional conservative/liberal/independent, although in todays vernacular I might be viewed more like Senator Bernie Sanders, and am a francophile.

What's your favorite public radio show?

I liked the Al Franken Show, but it is gone with the wind. Now I listen to Radio France International, All Things Considered, Rachel Maddow, Kojo Nnamdi and Radio Pacifica (KPFW) "Don't Forget the Blues".

What's your secret talent?

I have a knack for incorporating current events into a gestalt view of the world that links events and culture into creative webs that allow people to see how the things that they do can help to make the world a better place. I could put it another way. There are the words and events we hear and see. These words and events often have meanings and effects beyond the immediate moment. And, as Freud says "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." And I am quite good, though not perfect, at decerning these deeper messages and meanings.

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

The hum of the city.

What's your favorite sound memory?

The sounds you hear when you ride a roller coaster at the amusement park.
