Bio

I am the researcher, writer, and producer of a radio program called The Writer's Almanac. Before that I worked at a pharmacy, an architectural firm, a summer camp, a casino, a restaurant, a software company, a Catholic school, and a university donor relations office.

What's your favorite public radio show?

Well, for a long time I lived and breathed This American Life, and I still love it. But the show that's been blowing my mind lately is Radiolab. I love the sense of wonder they bring to stories about science. I'd like to do a show with that kind of sensibility about literature or history.

What's your secret talent?

I have memorized a significant amount of poetry in my lifetime, and I still know most of the poems by heart. My favorite one to recite begins, "Eskimos in Manitoba, / barracuda off Aruba, / cock an ear when Roger Bubo / starts to solo on the tuba."

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

"Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" Which I've been singing to my daughter a lot lately. I'm not sure this song has gotten the attention it deserves. There's something so beautiful about how Dionne Warwick's voice floats effortlessly through lyrics about dreams turning to dust and fading away. Magic!

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

Intermittent whining and screaming of my 8 month old son, who still can't sleep through the night.
