Bio

Born in Charlottesville, VA. Graduated from the University of Virginia in '99. Spent my twenties trying all sorts of things, teaching, construction, leading wilderness trips, writing. Now, I work in public radio all the time. I'm work part-time for a Virginia based interview show, and freelance whenever I can for national programs.

I grew up in a kind of radio culture. In high school, I started listening to community radio and was blown away by Negativland. In college, I hosted a rock show, and enjoyed the power to create mood using a combination of voice, music, and tape. As I got a little older, I started hearing more documentaries on the radio, started getting fascinated by storytelling for the radio. I attended the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in 2005 which got me started on making my own documentaries. I'm slowly learning the history and the basics of that kind of storytelling. But I still remember hosting radio shows in college, and there's a big part of me that would love the chance to develop and host my own program.

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

Songbirds singing all night long. 10PM, 3AM. They are active. Chirpy little birds with quick staccato songs. Rusty porch swing birds, bar fight birds, squawky jays... All night, at least in the springtime.

What's your favorite sound memory?

My uncle playing me old blues records while the grown ups chatted with wine at the dinner table.
