My radio work has been featured on The NPR Station Showcase, the "The Splendid Table," distributed by American Public Media and "Oregon Considered" on Oregon Public Broadcasting. My voice can always be heard on my monthly show, DIY, Portland on KBOO Community Radio, Free Radio Olympia and many other low-power and community stations. (It's also available as an iTunes podcast.) I am a regular contributor to the Pulitzer prize winning Willamette Week. I am also a sporadic, late-night dj. I've covered a wide range of topics in my work from anarchist clowns and off-beat art projects to water quality and FBI activities. My mother once described my beat as “gay artists and government officials.” I grew up in Baltimore, attended Oberlin College and now, I live happily in Portland, Oregon with my cats Roxy and Miles.
- What's your favorite public radio show?
My favorite radio is on Wednesday nights on KBOO or podcasted via NPR. If you're reading this, my favorite shows on NPR are likely many of your favorite shows on NPR and we all know their names. My favorite shows on KBOO are "Circle A Radio" a show about political struggles around the world produced in Portland collectively by 4 amazing (and somewhat anonymous) women. Following "Circle A" on Wednesdays is "Drinking from Puddles," where you can often hear host Brandon Lieberman chatting with live musical guests or promoting local shows in addition to a solid mix of current music that rocks on every level.
- What's your secret talent?
I've become skilled at listening to the radio and sleeping at the same time.
- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
"Familia" by Mirah
- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
Organic, musical sounds made by bands and people who I love. The stirring of cats. My favorite podcasts. A small sample of my favorite musical sounds.
- What's your favorite sound memory?
My father laughing. Really laughing.
- Which station do you listen to most?
- It's a tie: KBOO/KOPB
