I am a veteran insurance agent who has had a lifetime love affair with the broadcasting industry and with recorded music of various genres. My strength in terms of music knowledge is classic country music and Frank Sinatra. That's a pretty broad bridge to cover but I find Sinatra's life, music, and career to be unique and inspiring. As for classic country music I find that to be an art form that is second only to the Blues in its representation of everyday people. The stories behind the songs and the artists have always fascinated me and even more so as I've grown older. My appreciation has grown as has my desire to preserve the legacy of this great art form.
- What's your favorite public radio show?
A Prarie Home Companion...hands down. This program speaks to me on many levels as it seeks to remind us of a lost or dying concept, that of the live variety radio program. The program is presented with a sense of humor without an ounce of sarcasm toward the concept and all who hold it dear. The News from Lake Wobegone speaks to and for small town America where such values and ideals prevail and are overlooked or looked down upon. We find a voice in Garrison Keillior who speaks to the little things that happen to the so called little people who go about every day life trying to be the best people they can be.
- What's your secret talent?
I like to think of myself as a communicator with passion. I'm particularly good at being a retail communicator as my line of work requires that of one if he or she is to succeed. I like to think that in the times that I have been a wholesale communicator (spoken to groups) that I have been able to bring that retail communication aspect into my delivery and to make people feel as though I speak with passion and sincerity and to them personally. Friends have told me that I have that ability. I'm willing to accept their word.
Further I pride myself on being a good listener. I know everything about myself, but as for the people I meet I usually know very little or nothing at all. I engage them in conversation by asking them questions about themselves and doing follow up questions based on their answers. It is a tried and proven formula that the next question is usually found in the previous answer. This establishes credibility and trust with people and it is not something I do out of insincerity, I'm genuine and I think that most people will come to recognize that about me when we meet and talk for a few minutes and I think it is a key component in being a good communicator, listening and paying attention to what people say. What they say is important...even if you disagree.- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
Frank Sinatra's recording of "Mind If I Make Love to You" from the movie HIGH SOCIETY. Believe me that's a much better song to have stuck in your head than Achy Breaky Heart or It's A Small World. Quality still counts for something, certainly with me.
- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
Probably 60's oldies but a very narrow scope of that format as most of the stations who program oldies rely on music services and have gotten more and more away from 60's oldies and are now into 70's oldies and thus watering down the format and destroying the brain cells of the listener.
- What's your favorite sound memory?
The sound of a Fender Telecaster guitar being played by Buck Owens.
- Which station do you listen to most?
- I listen primarily to WGN Radio a news-talk station out of Chicago.
