Bio

I was born, raised, and educated in Massachusetts. I lived in Kansas City for three years, then Houston for eight years. I moved back to Mass. in 2001, and bought the house I grew up in. I'm about three standard deviations out on the curve when is comes to technical education - I have a doctorate from MIT (Mechanical Engineering), and I was on the faculty at two different medical schools (orthopedic biomechanics) until I got sick of academics and went into consulting. (I didn't wait to be turned down for tenure.) I've seen all sorts of scientific fads come and go, so I approach a lot of the "Oooh, Aah" science with some serious doubts. I also go to a lot of open mikes with my guitar, and I won a free demo recording in a songwriting contest a year or so ago.

What's your favorite public radio show?

"Car Talk," of course. Then "Wait-wait Don't Tell Me." I listen to "On Point" a lot. And I try to catch "Only A Game" and "Prarie Home Companion" when I can.

What's your secret talent?

I play the mandolin. I also write songs, but that will be less of a secret if keep showing up at open mikes.

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

"No Woman No Cry." I have that in my car, and my son plays it every morning when I take him to school. It used to be "That Buckin' Song" by Robert Earl Keen, but we've worn that one out.

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

Rain on the roof.

What's your favorite sound memory?

I was about seven or eight, standing out in the yard, and a stiff wind whistled around me, but I was warm, because I had a good warm coat on.

Which station do you listen to most?
WBUR, now that Imus is off. I used to bounce between the two.
