Bio

Rene Gutel is a reporter and host at KJZZ in Phoenix, Arizona. Her work has appeared on Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Day to Day, Weekend Edition, the Voice of America, Pacific Time, The World, transom.org, and B-Side Radio. Before jumping to radio, Rene was a graduate student at UC Berkeley, working on a Master's degree in Arabic literature.

Rene frequently travels on assignment to far-flung corners of Arizona to cover oddball stories, from land skirmishes in the mountainside ghost town of Jerome, to debunking the roadside attraction "The Thing" along the I-10. Most recently, she's covered the build-up of National Guard troops along the U-S Mexico line, summer wildfires that threatened the new-agey tourist town of Sedona, and the hunt for and arrests of suspects in the Phoenix "Serial Shooter" case.

the sound of my dachshund shaking her head in the morning when she first wakes up. her ears make this cute flapping noise!
