My name is Jennie Keplar, and my life is colorful, to say the least. I don't just mean ROY G BIV colorful, either. We're talking the whole, honking 124 shades Crayola box colorful.
I'm a professionally trained actor, but no amount of Shakespeare, Wasserstein, or Albee alone could satisfy my love of finding more in the world of communication and art. Ultimately, I live for the art of people and the intricate maze of what makes people into the creatures we know them to be.
I'm a writer for a local paper in Columbus, OH. My column, The Fairy Princess Chronicles, details my life as the token straight girl living amongst the gay, lesbian, and transgendered community, but I try to tell personal stories that anyone can relate to. I consider my life to be a series of small embarrassments, but I have to find something funny in every second of it.
In college, I had the opportunity to produce and host my own weekly jazz showcase for the school radio station. I loved every second of it, choosing the setlist, picking rare recordings long overlooked my commercial radio....It was heaven. Unfortunately, it was too late into my college debt and theatre degree to switch, and my chance to wallow in radio bliss was shortlived.
Since my days in the cozy womb of college life, I've done just about everything allowed by law to make a living. Door Security at a drag bar, stand-up comic, grocery store clerk, CEO's receptionist, wardrobe crew member for a Cirque du Soliel show, program assistant at a science museum...I've done it all.(I'm like the George Plimpton of Columbus, sans the serious demeanor.) And through these experiences, I've learned that there's no end to the number of interesting characters we can encounter in our travels.
I see this as an oportunity to make good on what my heart has secretly wanted all along: An intimate radio show, talking to people from all walks of life, sharing music from artists who inspire me most, and telling stories from my own experiences.
Hopefully, this tells you a little bit about me, though I'm sure there's more to my story...And I'm hoping this won't be the last you hear from me.
- What's your favorite public radio show?
My absolute favorite radio show is A Prairie Home Companion. Garrison Keillor has practically become a family member in our household every Saturday night, as we love nothing more than to sit on the front porch, taking in his often hilarious stories while watching the sun set. It's a rare reminder of the gentle moments available to us, if we just stop and listen.
I actually met Garrison Keillor at a show taping in Columbus, and was deeply impressed by his accessibility and genuine love of meeting different kinds of people. He talked with every one of the approximately thirty people who waited to meet him after the show, and actually listened to their stories about themselves. I could tell that he was compassionate, and an active listener, the kind of host I would like to be one day.- What's your secret talent?
I can make my tailbone pop. I know, I know. Get me an agent, right?
- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
Evidently Chickentown - John Cooper Clarke
It was in The Sopranos episode last night.
- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
Grocery store delivery trucks, police sirens, and dogs barking.
- What's your favorite sound memory?
Listening to David Sedaris's "You Can't Kill the Rooster" for the first time.
- Which station do you listen to most?
- 90.5 WCBE Columbus
