Bio

My Name is John Tynan and I live in Tempe, Arizona with my beautiful wife and muse. We both work
for KJZZ, the local public radio station. I maintain their web sites and Rene is a reporter. We have a one year old dachshund named Rigatoni. I earned my MFA in creative writing from the University of Arizona in 1997. I have a hammock, a home theater, a python code book, a piano and a bicycle.

What's your favorite public radio show?

I like Radio Lab. Ted Talks. On the Media. Our local production of Here and Now. Fresh Air with Terry Gross, This American Life and Studio 360. On the web, I like Radio Open Source, The Sound of Young America and the Slate podcasts. If they were still making them, the little gray book lectures too.

What's your secret talent?

I have the ability to combine open source projects in the service of art. I recently was instrumental in working with programmers to put together a conversion process for going from reStructuredText documents to LaTeX and then to PDF. This has allowed me to put together a print-ready poetry manuscript simply using text files (via a PDA, for instance).

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

"Boom" by Charles Trenet. It's definitely stuck in my eardrum. It has an old-timey quality that is precious.

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

The sounds of Rigatoni, our year-old dachshund puppy. She whines a bit when she's excited, she barks of course. However one sound that we love is that she shakes her head and you can hear her ears flap. She also has a funny yawn which is another delightful way to mark the day.

Which station do you listen to most?
KJZZ / KBAQ
