After fifteen years as a public school English teacher, I finally succumbed to my dream and enrolled as a student in a low-residency MFA in Creative Writing program at Pacific Lutheran University (twice my alma mater) in Tacoma, WA. I still teach (for the money), but am nearing the end of my MFA experience. In my second year I started a non-profit organization called A River & Sound Review--a literary entertainment production that in the past year has grown to record live and studio programs once a month. I write fiction, humor, and essays.
- What's your favorite public radio show?
The order changes daily, I think--maybe even hourly--but the preferences always include Studio 360, This American Life, Prairie Home Companion, Fresh Air, Speaking of Faith, Weekend Edition, Morning Edition. Pretty much every show.
- What's your secret talent?
I can scat.
- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
"Do You Believe in Life After Love?" by Cher. It is ALWAYS there.
- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
Right now, the frogs croaking in the wetland area behind my back yard. It's spring and mating season and there are many little tadpoles about to be procreated.
- What's your favorite sound memory?
1974. My older brothers got a cassette recorder for Christmas and their first task was to create an improvised radio drama about a bank heist. I was seven and not cast in any role (much to my chagrin). I whined about it until they allowed me to announce a commercial. The cassette was lost two decades ago, sadly, after my parents moved.
- Which station do you listen to most?
- KPLU, KUOW, KXOT
