Couldn't imagine I didn't know what to say about myself. Been around long enough . . . Native of DC; educated in NYC, Boston and College Park, MD. Still trying to find my place in the world. I have always loved reading aloud. My husband wasn't interested, so he's gone now. Instead, I read for the blind as a volunteer--and it's not because I've lost my looks . . .

The sound of the human voice can do so much. I learned that as a child--if I was in a good place, my folks called me "Squirrel," if I was in trouble, "MICHELE" would come out of their mouths in tones so frosty (scary, loud--you pick a word) that the memory straigtens me out still.

I had teachers complement my expression when reading and it was enough to encourage me--and just something I have kept. I love public speaking and am lucky enough to get to do it in my job.

I am interested in this competition because being able to use my voice to express the empathy, fun, compassion, knowledge and love inside is a gift, and even if it doesn't work for this competition I am convinced that the opportunity will open for me somewhere.

Best wishes all--we are so brave.

What's your favorite public radio show?

I have more than one. I would have to say first:"Marion McPartland's Jazz Piano" followed by "Jazz Set," "Car Talk," and "Democracy Now."

What's your secret talent?

Easing folks away from the edge of their problem and helping them to realize that tomorrow will come and they will be OK.

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

Nina Simone singing "My Baby Just Cares for Me!"

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

People say it's a "cleaned-up" Southernishness, I don't hear it.

What's your favorite sound memory?

My Mom helping me learn "Getting to Know You" for my first few days in fourth grade. She had a Nancy Wilson album containing the song. She and I sang it together. Just awesome! Needless to say, I was the only kid singing a rendition containing syncopation and fingerpops!

Which station do you listen to most?
