I grew up in small town Minnesota, went to high school in suburban Omaha and live in metro Boston. I have worked in international business for about 20 years and have traveled to over 30 countries. I like playing frisbee, scuba diving, singing, and discussing current events with interesting people. I like getting out of my comfort zone because that’s when I learn the most about the world and myself.
About a year ago I serendipitously became a weekly guest on an evening conservative talk show on a 50,000 watt commercial station in Boston, discussing politics, morals, behavior, and science with the host and several thousand listeners. Being a 100% NPR girl, it was like going to Mars, but what a ride! What are my beliefs? How do I justify them to thousands of listeners who likely disagree (vehemently)? How do I make an argument that resonates with them given their values?
After six months the host was promoted to a mid-day slot and the segment ended. Needing to feed my new addiction, I finagled my way on to a college station where I’ve interviewed fascinating people and monologued about what’s on my mind. Then my husband left the newspaper article about this contest on the kitchen table. I must be on the radio. But, I would LOVE to be on PUBLIC radio.
- What's your favorite public radio show?
This American Life
- What's your secret talent?
Making long international plane rides shorter by getting to know my fellow passengers and playing with their kids.
- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
Love of My Life by Santana on his Supernatural cd.
- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
Pristine silence on my street while only one block away buses roar around a corner to a busy bus stop. The contrast is amazing.
- What's your favorite sound memory?
Traveling to a rural area in the country of Namibia for Christmas and hearing on the radio the German Lutheran liturgy I grew up with sung in Nama. No longer a church-goer, I hadn't heard that music since I was a child living in small town Minnesota, so the moment was an amazing mix of nostalgia, surprise, and pleasure at how the world is at once, different and the same.
