What's your favorite public radio show?

This American Life.

My husband and I fell in love while listening to This American Life each week in college. It wasn't long before we started using This American Life as a major criterion when screening potential new friends. Now, early every Sunday morning, we lie in bed, listening to the show, gathering our discussion topics for the week.

What's your secret talent?

I can do a complete wardrobe change while driving my car.

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

Brendan Benson, Poised and Ready

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

[shout] "Button!"
[footsteps running across the wood floor, up the creaky stairs, into the bathroom]
[bathroom door slamming shut]

It's the Button Game! A Moore household original, the Button Game is a never-ending competition in which one person (Player 1) speaks lyrics of a song in an attempt to trigger the singing of that song from another person (Player 2). To claim a point in the Button Game, Player 1 must declare "Button!" and push on the belly button of Player 2 within 30 seconds of Player 2 singing the song. [A complete list of rules is available via e-mail.]

What's your favorite sound memory?

There's nothing quite like being on a simulated space mission with a crew of middle school students during an emergency. The emergency buzzer sounds, and a confused commotion sets in all around the Space Station. Polyester space suits rustle as astronauts search for the cause of the anomaly. Frantic messages are exchanged through the COM system, trying to diagnose the problem. In the background, the oxygen system beeps, counting down the last few precious minutes of oxygen remaining on the Space Station. Footsteps of the Life Support (LS) team members shuffle back and forth between the oxygen system and the DATA station, where they receive instructions and diagrams for how to fix the problem. The rest of the crew waits impatiently, an involuntary whine coming from the back of their throats and an occasional word of encouragement. "Come on, you can do it." The oxygen system switches click into place as the LS team reroutes the oxygen.

A brief moment of silence.

Then, applause erupts as the crew realizes that the oxygen leak has been stopped. Messages of relief and congratulations begin to flood the COM system. "Great job, LS! The oxygen system has been stabilized."

Again, there's really nothing quite like it.
