After an eventful Las Vegas childhood, with side trips on the road of life to Chicago and D.C., I've finally settled in sunny upstate New York.
Well, the sun is shining today, at least.
It always feels a bit presumptuous to fill out these things, as if I have any idea whatsoever what others may or may not find interesting about me. I'll give it a whirl. I've been a bag-boy, serving-lad, ice-cream scooper, coffee-boy, copy-kid, copyreader, camp counselor, substitute teacher, sometimes writer, and current editor. An ill-fated effort to keep pet fish and a misunderstanding of the breeding process has left in my care dozens of charming but hungry guppies.
I read a bit less than I'd like, watch TV more than I should, and spend a bit too much money on coffee and comic books. I've been known to obsess over obscure points of history almost as much as the injustice of the latest Survivor vote-out. Some call me a nerdy and neurotic, others say charmingly jaded. Hundreds of guppies know me by only one name: daddy.
So what did you want to know?
- What's your favorite public radio show?
So, so many to choose from. I'm pretty sure "Ideas" is Canadian and not NPR-related, so maybe doesn't count. I'll go with Diane Rehm, whose show I'm not sure I could live without.
- What's your secret talent?
Secret, as in "so secret I'm going to post it on this website"?
- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
Jeff Buckley's "Mojo Pin" is duking it out with Fergie's "My Humps."
Oh, to be able to control these things.- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
Easy choice, but definitely running water. Between the pond out back, and the fish tank in the living room, there's always a bit of that waterfall sound somewhere. Even if just out of range.
- What's your favorite sound memory?
I grew up outside of Las Vegas, and I remember fondly the excitement of getting to go into the city and hearing that high pitched, electronic "cha-ching" noise from a million slot machines. Ah, childhood.
- Which station do you listen to most?
- WXXI - Rochester, and a great deal of Sirius.
