I started as a radio announcer in 1979 at age 18, but later decided to drop my on-air aspirations and join a radio station's advertising sales staff in 1982. From that point on my radio career was spent behind the scenes; first as a manager of a 100,000 watt FM station at the age of 23, and later as a regional manager for a broadcasting group. I left radio broadcasting in the summer of 2002 to start my own business which today is focussed on teaching marketing to small business owners and coaching managers how to become better leaders. Podcasting has allowed me to re-discover what I left behind in 1982. I spend my free time with my family, friends, my motorcycles, and banging out tunes on the guitar.
About my podcast, "You Are Guest" (www.youaretheguest.com):
“You Are The Guest” features people from the United States and around the world who give their opinions on everything from the Iraq War, political corruption and conspiracies, to who they think the next President of the United States will be. Listeners don't have to be rich or famous to be on, and they can be part of podcasting without having their own show.
In 2005, “You Are The Guest” received international praise from one of the most important and widely respected newspapers in the world. France’s Le Monde wrote that my news and political opinion talk show based in a small Iowa town of 25,000 people was “very original” and gave it a “10 out of 10” rating.
"You Are The Guest" was featured this past January by the nation's second largest magazine. USA WEEKEND invited 3 celebrities to name their favorite podcasts and tell why they liked them. Alan Colmes, radio personality and best known as the co-host of Fox News Channel’s “Hannity and Colmes” singled out “You Are The Guest” saying, "I've always thought that anybody can be made to sound interesting, and, thus, be a good guest. This podcast proves my point - everybody has a story worth telling."
- What's your favorite public radio show?
All Things Considered
- What's your secret talent?
I can talk to anyone about anything. Maybe a better way to put it is that I can have a meaningful conversation with anyone. In this modern world of instant messaging, e-mail, and text messages that seems to be a lost art. What many people don't realize is that the most important thing about having a good conversation is listening. I also try to walk away from the conversation having gained something whether it is knowledge, insight, a laugh or a smile, or a new acquaintance.
- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
It's a song I heard last night: Mamma Mia by ABBA. I know you can sing it too.
- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
The sound of corn growing. It's very faint right now, so you really need to have excellent hearing to hear the corn hum. But in the summer time, when the fields are full of hybrid corn I swear you can hear "the corn chorus". Or at least that's what I tell people who don't know any better.
- What's your favorite sound memory?
Listening to KAAY's (Little Rock, AR) late night album rock show "Beaker Street" with my AM radio under the covers on a school night.
- Which station do you listen to most?
- The public radio station I worked at when I was a college student, KTPR-FM, Fort Dodge, Iowa
