Bio: Imagine a little sister, and her brother is cleaning a dead pheasant, and he's showing her the lungs and the gizzard. She's eagerly learning what this pheasant was eating shortly before the untimely death.
I'm the little sister, and that's how my science love began.
What's your favorite public radio show?: A tie between Life 360 and maybe Fresh Air with a good guest.
What's your secret talent?: People love to talk to me. I'm the cork-puller of people who bottled something up.
What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?: The song that plays during the great Hug video on youtube.
What sound is most characteristic of where you live?: Polyphony. My son is explaining something about Ancient Greece. Greenpeace is at the door soliciting and the dog is barking. Oh, and the piercing fake-monkey call of our resident flicker, a great big woodpecker of the northwest.
What's your favorite sound memory?: Lying in half-sleep while my three children pretend nearby. Their voices rise and fall and braid together into something mysteriously soothing, the ebbs and flows of the pretending, the call and response of the relationships.
I write about neuroscience, and I swear if I had the right tools I could prove this braided-together sound makes neurons happy and releases warm friendly chemicals.
