Bio

An award-winning author and broadcaster, Jim Apfelbaum has worn many hats: talk show host, columnist, senior editor, news director, general assignment reporter, press secretary, disc jockey, Information Specialist IV, proofreader and editorial consultant.

A two-time winner of the Southern Texas PGA Media/Public Relations Award; a five-time nominee, he’s covered golf’s Ryder Cup, U.S. Open, British Open, and the Masters.

Since 1997, Jim has hosted That’s Golf! the longest-running show (10 years this Saturday!) on sports market leader KVET-AM (Clear Channel). He’s interviewed many of the game’s newsmakers and regularly books national-caliber guests. Golftexas.com named That’s Golf! “Best Golf Radio Show” in Texas.

As senior writer for AOL’s groundbreaking iGOLF, Jim contributed five times a week for three years. Golf World singled out his travel writing as “The stuff no one else has.” The book Golf on the Web cited his humor and commentary as “The best of the bunch.” He is immediate past president of the Texas Golf Writers Association.

His books include Golf on $30 a Day (or Less) from Villard Books and, with collaborator Barbara Puett, A Woman’s Own Golf Book, and Golf Etiquette, both on St. Martin’s Press. Selling steadily for a decade, a second, updated edition, debuted in November 2003. Awarded four stars by Golf Magazine, it has been recommended by, among others, Paul Harvey who called it: “The first and last word on how properly to behave on and off the golf course.”

Jim’s seventh book, a series of historical and humorous essays, ‘Golf Unplugged,’ will be published in October 2007 by Tatra Press. He also authored a 200 + page illustrated history commissioned by the State of Texas for the Texas Department of Banking centennial in 2005. His latest book, edited, is The Gigantic Book of Golf Quotations (Skyhorse Publishing, 2007).

A past editor and columnist for Austin Monthly magazine, Jim has served as a board member of the Writers League of Texas and Golf Collectors’ Society. He's a two-time winner of the WLT’s "The Word is Art" award. He recently contributed a piece on manual typewriters to “SoundClips” on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”

The Philadelphia native has lived in Austin, TX since 1989. He graduated from the University of Vermont with a B.A. in Political Science in 1981.

What's your favorite public radio show?

I love Fresh Air. We also have a nice blues show here on KUT, Blue Monday. I loved hearing Red Barber on with Bob Edwards and positively adore Studs Terkel, though I've had to rely on tapes and his books.

What's your secret talent?

Hmm, a fabulous typist, observant, very adept at picking fleas off the dog and discerning what might be on a cat's mind at any given moment. I was also once very good with an axe, able to split a kitchen match. I am a quick and precise editor.

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

There's a song the teacher typically plays during yoga class at the coffee shop, a chant of some kind that often stays with me on the bike ride home, but I'd have to say currently an Aimee Mann song, kind of haunting, "Deathly," it's called. Spooky.

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

Morning doves, mostly, a favorite, familiar sound. On Sundays, it's the organ from the AME church across the street. Sometimes he or she really lets go.

What's your favorite sound memory?

Moving water, likely as not. There's a favorite Vermont swimming hole, and this comes from a connoisseur. Tinker Gorge is music to my ears, a tonic, though I haven't been there in many years.

Which station do you listen to most?
KUT, although I did find Mickey Bradley from the Undertones, once a favorite, on Radio Ulster. Fab!
