We moved 2 big times when I was a kid. When people ask me, "What's your hometown?", I tend to pause. We moved from small town Iowa, to small city New Hampshire to suburban Washington, DC. I still feel like Vienna, Va is home, although we live on the West Coast now. I am married, have a young daughter and two pet house rabbits. Can you tell I'm a Taurus? I'm a nester. Visual Art has always been a big part of my life. I have been an elementary art teacher for my entire post college career. I love it, but it is way more work than most people think. I am all about helping kids to communicate through art. One of my newest passions is storytelling. I am working on my Masters in "Creative Arts and Learning", and I fell in love with storytelling in class. I am fascinated by connections between stories that share the same motifs from all over the world, and how fairytales and fables creep into our subconscious. Check out my promo...It's short.
- What's your favorite public radio show?
My favorite public radio show has to be "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me", closely followed by "Says You!", "This American Life" and "The Splendid Table". I am a junky. They all have a quirky and geeky quality that appeals to the ultimate nerd in me. I feel like I am home when I am listening to them, so comfortable and content, learning new things.
- What's your secret talent?
I can still whistle through my teeth, even after 4 years of orthodontia. I can wiggle my ears. I am very good at Trivial Pursuit and word puzzles. I have about 500 students a year, and I know all of their first names. Most of my other talents aren't so secret: I can lift one eyebrow, I am a ceramic sculptor, I can carry a tune, I love to be dramatic!
- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
"It's not the end of the world" by Super Furry Animals
- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
Birds drowned out by Metro Buses, full rain gutters.
- What's your favorite sound memory?
My grandparents had a motor boat docked on Lake Rathbun when I was a child. I have always loved the sound of the bubbles made by the motor. That sound was ticklish in my ears. I would laugh with delight as we sped around the lake. I am reminded of summer evening breezes whipping my hair into my face as we enjoyed the ride. Sometimes I even got to captain the boat.
