Geo Beach made his radio arrival in utero at three months gestational age –- mom dropped by Boston’s WEEI studios with donuts for dad, anchor at the CBS flagship station. News of Geo’s eventual delivery was broadcast in a driving sleet during Valentine’s morning drivetime. The Beach boy grew up fooling with his father’s portable reel-to-reel, rockin’ with Barbara Ann, and making up believable stories. Then Geo rolled out in the WEEI NewsJeep during the freaky October 29th "Snow" Hurricane Ginny –- and became intoxicated by the flashing lights, the carphone, and the access afforded a fedora with a press pass in the hatband. Eventually, he obtained, by way of bus ride and grueling written examination, that icon of 70s station foyer fashion, the Radiotelephone Third Class Operator Permit with Broadcast Endorsement. A couple years later Geo Beach interrupted WPEA’s regular programming with breaking news and a short Latin lesson -– nolo contendere. Spiro Agnew had resigned and copped a plea. Shortly thereafter, Agnew’s boss began making the news that made NPR. Beach has been a listener, member, underwriter, volunteer, and staff at W and K public radio stations –- university, community, NPR, and pirate –- ever since.
