- What's your favorite public radio show?
"Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me!" is most definitely my favorite radio show, with "This American Life" a close second. I love the intelligence and humor of Peter Sagal and his witty panel. What an incredibly fun way to stay abreast of the news and maintain a razorsharp critical perspective. I also have to hand it to Ira Glass and his talented staff and contributors. Their rich, human stories and brilliant, unifying themes never fail to entertain and move me. In my view, both of these shows represent public radio at its finest.
- What's your secret talent?
I can wake up, get dressed, and leave the house in 10 minutes. I'm not saying that I always do, just that I can. Based on some of my less-than-stellar outfits and hairstyles, though, I'm not sure that this "talent" is much of a secret...
- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
Serves me right for hating this movie so intensely.
I recently saw "Music and Lyrics," a failure of a Hugh Grant-Drew Barrymore vehicle. He's a washed up composer, she's a reluctant lyricist, and the film repeatedly features his 80's pop hit and the new ballad they write together.
In a cruel turn of cosmic tomfoolery in which I am the butt of the joke,* BOTH of these songs have been running through my head for the past two days.
Pity me.
*(not to get too grandiose)
- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
I live in my office for at least eight hours a day. One machine generates most of the audio architecture.
It is the air conditioner. A genuine blowhard that runs hot or cold, it alternately roars at a deafening decibel and shuts off completely. I literally sigh in relief each time it ceases its thunder. Ah... Sweet silence.
- What's your favorite sound memory?
Hard to say. The sound of applause sure is nice. I also like an off-key version of "Happy Birthday to You." James Taylor's gentle crooning, especially during long car rides, always brings a smile. A bedtime story of any sort is a pleasurable comfort.
- Which station do you listen to most?
