Bio: I'm in the wine business which has supported my travel, dilettantism and a ferocious book habit for most of my professional life. I can order my tapas in Spanish and my crepes in French, but you might as well know now that I still consider barbeque one of the 4 major food groups. I very much like what Arthur Rubenstein said: "I have found that if you love life, life will love you back." If there were one idea I hope my voice could convey it would be that.
What's your favorite public radio show?: It's a tie. To the Best of Our Knowledge, a terrific show. And Blue Monday hosted by Larry Monroe on KUT which must be the best Blues show in the world.
What's your secret talent?: I fear no food--I can't merely observe the exotic, I must absorb it. Also, I can name all those great sax men from the 40s, 50s and 60s by their sound, even the obscure ones.
What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?: Charlie Rouse's version of "When Sunny Gets Blue" on a record called Unsung Hero. It's one of those tracks that for me is pure soul food.
What sound is most characteristic of where you live?: Outside it's lawn mowers, but inside it's music, movies and turning pages.
What's your favorite sound memory?: The Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett albums my folks played on their stereo when I was 4 or 5--the richness of that sound--I almost drown in nostalia any time I hear it.
