I live down the street from my elementary school, and a few miles from my parents and grandmother. While I rejected my hometown for several years, I'm living here again and beginning to understand just how lovely it is. Charlotte exists in that hinterland between "town" and "city;" we're growing nearly as fast as Las Vegas and the greater Phoenix area; when people learn you're from here, born and raised, they express a facetious astonishment... I mean, many of us have been around a while. And if you have, it feels like a quaint practically Mayberry-esque place, where everyone knows everyone, and has for generations.

What's your secret talent?

Reciting things almost as fast as the Micro Machine man.

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

In preparations for my, um, upcoming attempt to win American Idol, I have been singing Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Rod Stewart, and Phish. "Velvet Sea" is one of my favorites at the moment.

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

Birds chirping in the morning, crickets at night, and trains sounding in the distance before dawn. That, and heavy Southern accents!

What's your favorite sound memory?

I remember lying in the backseat on a car trip, with my eyes closed, pretending to be asleep. In the front, my parents kept their voices low -- I was soothed by the murmur. It was also raining lightly -- their voices combined with the hypnotic squeak of the wipers on the glass... it enchanted me. I felt protected and warm.

Which station do you listen to most?

I'm going to be completely honest. 95.7 FM The Ride, classic rock. AND member station 90.7 WFAE... but less.
