Teacher, journalist, former NPR intern, and universal auntie.
- What's your favorite public radio show?
"This American Life" -- I saw them live at the Opera House in Boston when they were on tour for the new TV show last month, and I bought a TAL kite to fly over the beach this summer. Though I'm a long-time fan of "Car Talk" too. I love how they figure out problems, and I trust them enough that I bring my car to their garage in Cambridge for repairs.
- What's your secret talent?
I have a few secret superpowers:
1. A Line Forms Behind Me - I can go into an empty store, restaurant, Dunkin Donuts, whatever; walk right up to the counter, and within a few minutes there will be a line out the door. When I tell people this, they think I'm delusional, but then they see it in action, and never doubt again. I should contract myself out to new businesses to help them drum up a customer base....
2. Rock Star Parking - No matter the neighborhood, no matter the time of day, if parking exists at all, I will make quick business of finding a space near the door. Even works in foreign lands; you just gotta believe.
3. Narrative Memory of Death - I don't always remember the important stuff, like who my college roommate was sophomore year. But I can spin a killer yarn from some obscure random memory, full of entertaining (and true!) details.Hey, there's a reason my friends have been urging me for years to get on the radio...
As for actual talents? I knit adorable baby hats, drive like a New York cabbie, can sing pretty well, and I'm awfully charming.
- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
I've been bouncing between the Silversun Pickups "Lazy Eye", "Che Gelida Manina" from La Boheme, and snippets of Interpol (all their songs sound alike, who knows which one it was) all afternoon. Nothing is sticking; they're sort of shuffling through my head.
- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
Children laughing and running around. There are kids aged from newborn to five years old living upstairs, across the street, and next door to me on either side. I love my neighborhood!
- What's your favorite sound memory?
My grandmother used to sing me lullabies in Italian, and when I got a little older she taught them to me.
- Which station do you listen to most?
- WFNX, WBUR, WBCN
