I have a master's degree in Public Affairs Journalism from Columbia College Chicago.
I write a lot about the restaurant and bar business, but I do it a bit differently than most other restaurant writers. I use my many (too many) years of experience working as a bartender, waiter and manager to bring readers a little more behind-the-scenes. My goal is to enlighten readers, to give them a broader understanding of the places they love to spend their time and money.
I use a wider variety of voices in my articles than most.- What's your favorite public radio show?
Just one?
I like...
"Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me,"
"Car Talk,"
"Media Matters."- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
I'm learning to play the guitar and i just finished practicing so I have a few....
"Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" Huddie Ledbetter (covered by Nirvana). I listen to that song over and over.
"I Saw The Light" Todd Rundgren
"Cold Cold Heart" Hank Williams
"Let's Get It On" Marvin Gaye
- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
I live in the Uptown/Sheridan Park neighborhood of Chicago. I hear it all. My sound life consists of sirens, softball games at the park a block over, my neignbors bickering, my other neighbor rehearsing with his band. I hear drunk partiers leaving the 4a.m. bar around the corner and construction equipment banging away a few hours later.
- What's your favorite sound memory?
A basketball being dribbled in the alley behind my house when I was a kid
- Which station do you listen to most?
- Chicago Public Radio (WBEZ) and WXRT
