1951: I was born in Philadelphia, but it wasn't my fault I was very young. Grew up in Ho-ho-kus, New Jersey. There is even a Ho-ho-kus song that the Andrew Sisters did, but if I sing it then you'll have to kill me. There were five kids in my family. (Now I have two grown daughters and three grown step-children and three grandchildren, with one on the way-YIPPIE!)
1969: Springfield College, marriage, kids, more college, divorce, and the 80-90s were my career years in New York City.
1999: On to semi-retirement in Santa Barbara as a 'Fortune 100' consultant. Re-marriage. Settled in to write 7 books. I'm on book # 8.
2005-Present: I was taken out by a rare immune condition which paralyzed me from the waist down in 30 minutes. I am up and walking again, sorta. I usually look like the poster child for Band-aids.
I have been an activist since I was three. The story goes that I chased a 17 year old boy down the street with a stick for a sword and a garbage can lid for a shield because he picked on my twin brother. I proceeded to work for Save the Children and UNICEF (yes, several after my pre-school debut).
I've produced national fund-raisers and special events (including a one-night event on broadway that I emceed). I've hosted tele-thons, radio-thons, had my own cable TV series and co-hosted a weekly radio show. I love interviewing people of all ages. I use their stories in my books. My recent ones included a 2 year old and a 97 year old.
I've traveled around the world and done a lot of weird jobs, most paid well below a living wage: Stand-up Comic, Non-Profit Director, Artist, Actress, Minister, Author, and Rock Hound. If there is a lower paying job please tell me. Apparently I think I am the heir to "Momma's Bank Account".
- What's your favorite public radio show?
Car Talk. I love the genius of Click and Clak having a call-in help radio show that is engaging, fun and informative.
I feel as if I am listening to my family banter around the dinner table.
It might be noted that the way I shop for cars is by color and cup holders. I can’t even find mine in a parking lot (they all look the same to me).
But I can listen to an entire show and not be bored with their do-hickey-thing-a-mabob-duel-cam-shock-filter-cylinder silliness. And, boy oh boy, do they make it sound easy to do.
- What's your secret talent?
I can play the spoons and yodel at the same time. I also do animal imitations, my favorite is the crane and the dying pig. And yes, I can still do that spitting blood on demand thing (RE: my audio piece).
I also write funny short stories see my blog at: hysterialanedotcom@blogspot.com
- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
The entire movie track of "Cold Mountain" especially Allison Krauss singing "The Scarlet Tide" muy meloncholy.
- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
The buzzing of hummingbirds. They dive-bomb you as if they've seen way too many John Wayne WWII movies. It's hysterical.
I think everyone in Santa Barbara has at least two of these feathered bees in their yard.
- What's your favorite sound memory?
Splashing and screaming as my brother and sisters and many cousins had cannonball and can-opener contests off the dock at Deep Creek Lake.
- Which station do you listen to most?
- I have more than one NPR station in my area. I don't want to play favorites.
