Bio

I was born on Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base in North Carolina in 1974. From there, my dad was stationed in Hawaii until I was 4 years old. Then, we moved to Duncanville, Texas where I spent the next 14 years. Don’t’ get me wrong, Duncanville was a great town to grow up in… but HAWAII for crying out loud! It’s ok, though, after Duncanville, I spent 6 years in beautiful Detroit while attending college. From there, I moved to Sacramento, CA to begin graduate school (which didn’t work out so well… turns out I wasn’t meant to be a professor) and lived there for 4 glorious years before moving to Tempe, AZ for 1year. Finally, the draw of family, especially my first niece, brought me back to Dallas, where I now toil in the business world. Oh, some stuff has happened along the way…

What's your favorite public radio show?

Although It’s not on the Dallas NPR station anymore, I still love Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya Know? It entertains me every time. His ability to “herd cats” while seemingly having a great time amazes me. His joy transcends to his guests and auditorium audience, and all the way through the radio waves to us, his listeners. I greatly admire his savvy, but mostly appreciate how good I feel during and after his program.

What's your secret talent?

It’s a tie: I have never lost a thumb-wrestling match, AND, I still know the entire rap from Chaka Kahn.

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

For a number of years now, the theme song from the 70’s children’s show “The Banana Splits” repeats in my head, seemingly in a continuous loop. Join me in madness: http://melaman2.com/cartoons/singles/mp3/banana-splits.mp3

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

In Dallas, the sounds are dominated by the zoom of the highway… I also think you can hear the heat.

What's your favorite sound memory?

What a great question… Partly, I hate to refer to something I mentioned in my entry clip, but one of my favorite memories period, happened during a trip to Boston to see my brother. We went to Fenway Park to see a baseball game because “the rocket” Roger Clements was pitching… If you aren’t a baseball fan, he’s a legend, and growing up in Dallas, we have very few baseball legends. During the singing of the national anthem, the PA system went out, and without missing a note, the crowd picked it up, and just belted the second half of the national anthem out across Boston. It’s funny how that sound-memory initiates so many visual moments.

Which station do you listen to most?
KTCK and KERA get equal time from me… either way, commercial music is out, out , out.
