Bio

I have been an emergency physician since 1992, but I have a long-standing interest in neuroscience. Last year I started the Brain Science Podcast, which is aimed at a general audience. My goal is to share the recent discoveries about how our brain makes us who we are. I also have a second podcast called Books and Ideas, which is devoted to discussing books on other topics including science, philosophy, history, and current events.

Podcasting has given me an outlet for my ability to explain science and other complex topics in plain English. I also enjoy interviewing writers.

What's your favorite public radio show?

I enjoy Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Fresh Air, and Science Friday.

What's your secret talent?

I am actually a great cook!

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

I am not a musical person

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

Insects and lawnmowers. I live in Alabama.
