Hi everyone.

I just realized I can use this space to "air" two of the essays I submitted with my audio entry - "Why should you be on public radio?" and "Who is your favorite host and why?". These essays, especially the one on why I should be on public radio, further explain my proposed show "In My Humble Opinion". Please read the following. Thanks.

Why should you be on public radio?

I should be on public radio because I need a forum to present my ideas and an outlet to express my opinions. I know the second part sounds egotistical and vain, but a lot of my best and most useful ideas are developed or come to me as a result of my outrage over events and commonplace occurrences that defy common sense and logic. Howard Stern, because he had a public forum, was able to turn his outrage concerning being stuck in traffic as a result of road construction being done during "normal" hours, into getting the "Howard Stern Rule" (a law that required road construction of the nonemergency type to be conducted only between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m.) passed in New York State.

I really do have a blueprint for a national health-care system as mentioned briefly in my submitted audio file. The two minutes you allotted us is an incredibly short amount of time (but I think I do understand your reasoning), so I tried to just hint at some of the "upcoming" topics for my show. I relish the opportunity to have such a show, but I also strongly feel, "in my humble opinion", that I can make this a better world.

I may have a lot of "humble" opinions, but truth be told, I am actually very open minded. A radio show forum, with hopefully listeners calling in, would allow for great feedback concerning my ideas to improve this world, as well as allowing others to present ideas to be critiqued, massaged, and then either thrown out or run with.

I can't wait to discuss in detail the protocol I have devised that definitively answers the question, "who pays for the first date". I am currently writing an article on this topic that I hope to get published, but I know it would be an excellent topic to discuss on a radio show as it would generate a lot of heated opinions from listeners. As you can see, my radio show, "In My Humble Opinion", will be very eclectic and hopefully hold the attention of the listening audience from week to week by pontificating on a wide variety of subjects.

Who is your favorite host and why?

I am assuming you are asking who is my favorite host on public radio and why. My answer to that question is Peter Sagal. I absolutely love Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, and host Peter Sagal has to be a good part of the reason why. He is enthusiastic, humorous, knowledgeable, and always friendly and patient with the contestants. However, one of his greatest traits is probably how well and effortlessly he "handles" the talented guest panelists, by allowing them to shine and never getting in their way. If he were less of a host, there would be noticeable moments of friction or lack of continuity. But there are none.

If this question allows me to choose my favorite host not on public radio, then I would have to include Alex Trebek in a tie with Peter Sagal. I so hope you allow me the opportunity to create the show "In My Humble Opinion" on public radio. I can't wait for the opportunity to address the ungrateful and insidious comments made by Ken Jennings in his blog concerning Alex Trebek. Jennings accused Mr. Trebek of being replaced by a robot version, in other words he was saying that Alex Trebek was basically just going through the motions these days as host of Jeopardy. In my humble opinion nothing could be further from the truth! Anyone watching Jeopardy (and I bet the ungrateful Ken Jennings probably doesn't watch any more) these days would see what an excellent host Alex Trebek is. Whether it's the kick he gets out of reading certain clues - such as when he attempts to imitate Humphrey Bogart, Arnold Schwarzenegger, or even Katharine Hepburn, or the joy he expresses when contestants do well, or the deft manner with which he puts the teen and college tournament contestants at ease, Alex Trebek is clearly a skilled and caring host.
