Bio

I grew up in Juneau, Alaska, a small, rainy community with no road out. I started volunteering for our local radio station at a young age, first as a host of "We Like Kids", then answering the phones during pledge drives, and finally hosting my own jazz show on Saturday nights. I attended the University of Alaska Southeast for two years, spending my second year abroad in Spain. I've since transferred to a university in Oregon and will graduate in May.

Interactions among people fascinate me, so I've begun a project where I record random conversations (at parties, bonfires, open forums, class, restaurants - wherever) in an effort to capture those interesting moments and revelations that we often forget about. It is my hope that I will be able to compile them in a way that demonstrates something interesting about how people think and communicate.

The reason I love public radio so much is because it provides a forum for such projects and helps put the world in perspective. If I were the next public radio star I can guarantee a program that challenges and moves you, because that is what I seek from my life and the people in it.

What's your favorite public radio show?

This American Life

What's your secret talent?

If you give me any topic, I can make up a song about it right off the top of my head. It may not be the best song ever, but usually they're at least entertaining, and sometime they turn out pretty well.

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

"When You Were Young" by The Killers, although I only just heard their version. The one in my head, the one I sing along to, is sung by the men's acapella group at my university.

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

At school in Oregon it's the sound of a train blowing its horn. Back home in Alaska it's either birds chirping or helicopter rotors reverberating off of the mountains.

What's your favorite sound memory?

My friend who raps by spitting out the words "A bis-cuit...A bis-cuit" over and over again. She lowers her voice and elongates the "bis" and then says the "cuit" higher and faster. It may not qualify as good beatboxing, but it's pretty funny.

Which station do you listen to most?
KTOO, my local public radio station!
